Defense for an Invulnerability Brute

Pull 1 of the To-Hit IOs out of Invincibility and replace the other 2 with 2 Rectified Reticle,it gives 1.88% S/L defense.
I'm more of a concept player than a power player, but, still, I want to get a little more survivability in. (It's part of my concept)
![]() Anyway, I was wondering how to softcap a level 47 Invulnerability Brute's S/L Defense. I don't have Mids (I'm using a Mac), so I can't post my build in its entirety, but I have: Invulnerability (six-slotted, 2 Defensive IOs, 3 To-Hit Buff IOs, and LotG Def/Rech) Tough Hide (3 Defense IOs, giving about 6% Typed defense) Weave (1 Defense IOs, just gotten at 47 so I haven't had a chance to slot it yet, about 4.5%) Small S/L Defense bonus from a full Titanium Coating set, for another 1.25%. Total bonus: 11.77% S/L, 10.52% to F/I/E/NE, 7.11% to Melee, and 4.61% to Psi/Ranged/AoE, not including whatever buffs I get from Invulnerability (which can push me into the ~20% range). So, since softcapping positional is probably impractical, where do I get the other 35% or so I need to softcap S/L? Caveat: I only have about 9 million Inf to spend, because I'm apparently absolutely terrible at playing the markets. (For example, just this moment, as I was typing this post up, I managed to sell a crafted Level 45 Performance Shifter End/Acc IO.... for 250,000 Inf). I want to get the rest of the LotG set, but it's not happening on that budget. |
Unfortunately, you aren't going to be buying any of the things you need to softcap an Invuln with a 9 million influence budget.
Personally, I would rather get Energy/Negative defense than S/L. My reason? You already resist the hell out of S/L damage, but you barely resist E/N at all. If you have no defense to E/N you're going to get hit with it a lot, and it's going to hurt. Also, if the Energy damage in question is Electric, you're going to find yourself running out of endurance in a hurry. Invuln does get some End Drain resistance, but 4-5 Mu hitting you is still going to drain you. Additionally, most Cold attacks have a smashing of lethal component, so your S/L defense will help with that, but Electric attacks are pure energy, and there are a lot of pure negative energy attacks as well, S/L defense will be useless against those attacks.
My advice:
Run tip missions for Alignment merits, and use the Alignment merits to pick up as many sets of 4 Kinetic Combat as your build will allow you to slot. Gives a 3.75% bonus to S/L defense for slotting 4.
Slot your resistance powers with Reactive Armor instead of Titanium Coating. You get the exact same bonus for 4 slots instead of 6, plus you get some E/N defense as well.
Slot any PBAoE attacks you may have with 3 Eradication, and 3 Cleaving Blow. Combined you will get 4.38% E/N defense.
Slot your Taunt (you did take it at some point, right?) with a Taunt set. You can get anywhere from 1.25% to 3.13% defense to S/L depending on which set and how many you slot (all taunt sets have a S/L defense bonus)
As far as affording all that goes, you have a few options available to you.
Since you're level 47, anything you fight in your missions has a chance to drop a purple recipe, which will sell for anywhere from 20 million up to 600 million. If you get a high dollar one, that alone will fund most of your build.
I already mentioned Alignment Merits, and they will probably be the easiest path for you to take. It's time consuming, but worth it in the long run, since you'll still be gaining levels while you run them.
You haven't mentioned what your Primary is, so I can't give any advice specific to it.

I lost this topic for a while, sorry.
Thanks for all the tips. I'll know what sets to keep an eye out for, for when I do have the funds. (I managed to drop a Respec Recipe... but I don't know whether I want to sell it or use it)
I mostly ask because Invulnerability is a very resist-heavy powerset, yet it's frequently spoken about as if it can be soft-capped relatively easily, so I wanted to see what I was missing. I'm thinking that it's the "relatively" that threw me.
The Brute's primary is Elec Melee, if that helps. (I do frequently get some "defense" by draining more powerful opponents' Endurance bars dry)

Invuln is not a 'resist heavy' set, it actually has as much or more +defense as it does resists.

Invuln just has a ton of EVERYTHING that keeps you alive.

I grabbed an old Mids build as an example: This is old, but I reserved slots for Inherent Fitness in the inherent powers, so it would actually look quite a bit better in live play.
With one foe in range, this build caps S/L. With three it caps S/L/E/N. With four it caps everything.
Not cheap, but hey, that's what alignment missions are for.
