Crabs are hard to build!

So my crab is now sitting at level 40, loaded with mostly SOs and a few generic IOs. I enjoy playing him quite a bit, but his build is hardly optimal since I just used the 'take what's fun now, I can always respec him later' style of leveling. Given the free respec we just got I decided I'd look up some examples and give it a whirl... only to finally give up an hour later.

My build goals are AoE damage, defense, and pets (likely in that order, although I am torn between the pets and defense). I was planning on going soul mastery and taking super jump as my travel power. I know teams love a walking leadership toggle machine, but it's important to me that my character feels powerful and that not all of my strength lies in my pets or toggle buffs (which is why I have AoE damage as my 1st priority). Additionally I hate playing 'endurance challenged' characters and I worry that with all of the toggles (3 crab leaders, 1 fort, 1 combat jumping, leadership, maybe fighting toggles, etc) I'd need to rely on sucking down blue pills left and right like a pre-i19 level 16 brute.

Is this kind of build even realistic? I'm thinking I might have to choose 2 of the 3 but I'm not sure (especially now that we have alpha slots).

Last night I was going to pump out a mids build but I had trouble even choosing my powers and couldn't even find a good place to start. Add to that the addition of the alpha slots (my first thought was the end reduction slot) and I gotta say, I'm just very confused. Does anybody have experience with an alpha slotted crab build

On of my biggest questions is... how important is the fighting pool? I want to have a good defense, but I have to admit I strongly dislike this pool as it is (imo) the most boring pool in the game. Is weave really necessary, or can I fill my defensive needs elsewhere? I suppose I could always sell my (in game) kidney to pick up the +3% defense purple, but it would be nice if I could manage it without spending quite so much.

That would be much appreciated! Since I always have issues 'starting from scratch' in Mids, my preferred method is to find builds that are very close to want I want and modify them to suit my tastes.

Weirdly enough my last character was a warshade and I had a lot easier time building him than the crab! It's just that every way I thought to build him I kept missing out on one thing or another that I really wanted. I think it would be easier if I dropped the fighting pool, but that extra defense is just so tempting.

This is the Crab build I personally use. It meets your criteria quite nicely I think.

The 3 AoEs I chose are effective and recharge very swiftly. I went heavy recharge so that AoE power will be improved initially when making this build. Was pleasently suprised when I got enough to make regular use of pets.

Hasten is 2 seconds from perma and the long recharge pets are 6 seconds short. You can't recast the pets until they fall anyways so 6 second downtime every 4 minutes is hardly killer.

Capped ranged defense, 38% melee and AoE defense.

With both max endurance accolades and the set bonuses I have and stamina slotted the way I have I can run both Maneuvers, both Assaults, TT: Leadership, Fort, Weave and Combat Jumping and fight forever. It is a razor's edge though. The slightest bit of sapping and I will start losing endurance. Also note that the pets take a giant chunk of endurance, it can take a bit to recover from casting them.

Also I use the Musculature Alpha slot. Prior to fully slotting this build should be endurance viable with the Cardiac though.

Depends exactly how high a difficulty you're wanting to solo.

I went without it for quite some time on my Crab (didn't take it until I'd been at 50 a while) and I still felt pretty powerful, stomping through moderate difficulty solo missions and having a blast on teams. I didn't really have anything besides range near to softcap, and even range wasn't quite there (I had some minor +def set bonuses, but for the most part it was CC:Defensive + TT:Maneuvers + Combat Jumping + Steadfast res/def for my defense needs).

In the end I worked it into my build and I'm happier with it than without - it's made the difference at the higher difficulty levels, especially against the nastier enemy groups. But I wasn't exactly unhappy without it.

edit: fwiw, my current build (I don't actually have most of the purples yet) - the double assault was added with i19 and proved too much endurance drain, until I got Cardiac and now I'm tearing through things even faster than before

I just wanted to thank everyone for their opinions and builds. I particularly like Wiccania's build, though I would have to change a few things here and there since I want a travel power. I'm thinking I might do away with the fighting pool and pick up a few more fun powers that I'd like to have (aim, travel power, and maybe omega maneuver). But since I'm leveling up and only in the low 40s, I decided to take some attacks like heavy burst and frag grenade to help out until I can pick up the other soul mastery attacks. I'll also be picking up hasten earlier to make better use of the pets, although I find that I'm not loving the pets so far as much as I thought I would (I think this is likely due to the fact that I haven't IOed him out yet and there is a lot of dead time between when I can use call reinforcements).

Once again thanks for the input, it's been very helpful.

Just to show a completely different approach, here's my petless hovercrab build after an i19 respec. I dropped the pets in my mid-40's and I've been perfectly happy with that approach. (Working on a 3rd build now with pets; my 2nd is a bane.) I have some expensive IOs in there I know, but only a couple purples. Now that I have a cardiac boost slotted, I probaby don't need the numina's and miracle uniques, or the PerfShifter proc, or the 2nd EndRed in Assault. No end problems any more.

I'm VERY happy I took the fighting pool. I also have it in the bane build. Very solid positional def (60/37/48), 58 S/L resist, 50 fire/cold, 42 nrg/ne/toxic (looking at the actual numbers in-game with a Cardiac Radial Boost giving me a slight DR enhancement).

This is definitely my toughest toon. It's not exactly a leveling build - 3 of the main attacks in his chain are the Mu AoEs. (Which are awesome.) This guy seriously rocks the ITF.

Nice looking build. I like it in general & all the procs!

Random feedback:

I would swap channel & longfang to another slotting, you've got plenty of acc and your range is overcapped. It looks like you are going for +dmg, so maybe 4 slot devastation in one (see below for other) + proc + filler?

Same deal with the 6th slot in one of your maneuvers.

It looks like you slotted zephyr just for hitting the aoe cap? How about dropping Ruin + a proc in Channelgun? That will hit that hole & give you two free slots. If you're really attached to the extra KB prot, stick a uniq in Wolf Spider Armor.

This leaves you with 3-4 spare slots...maybe drop hover (unless you need a fly [EDIT: Just noticed it's a hovercrab! _So maybe swap CJ & hover slotting & drop CJ? The defense #s I was looking at were with only one running, I forget if you can run both or not, been a while.]) and pick up something fun? Or drop a lotg+rech in hover & the leftover slot in one of the maneuvers?
