Those that stayed behind were fairly religious, if they were all like Caine, and believed that they are merely shadows of their former selves, soulless copies, it's that self awareness that triggers the shutdown. Can you live with yourself if you don't think that you are you? The aliens may simply considered it would be cruel to those who were reanimated to be burdened with such thoughts.
then are those who drown in hypothermic conditions and reanimated 30 minutes later just shades? i would think, at least in the case of the exposure victims, that the psychological bridge could be strung quite quickly, and with little effort.

It's the old transporter debate. When you are teleported, is the you that materialized at the other end the same person that was dematerialized?
this question always kind of niggled at me in the case of the stones. it would seem more traumatic to suddenly be in a body that is not your own. it responds to commands 'differently' and is full of the variety of issues that we put aside having lived in it our whole lives. round peg, square hole sort of thing especially in the case of the blue folk transfer. imagine that autonomic functionality is passed along as well (we don't know that it isn't) and the blue folk have 2 hearts...

if nothing else, the discussion of sgu tends to be fun
