SATA ii HDD to an older IDE Motherboard
If it's anything like my parent's Dim 4600, there are two SATA I ports on the motherboard so why would you need an adapter? I believe you would need to set a jumper on the drive for SATA I compatibility/speed.
I have no experience with an adapter like that but I did use a PCI to ATA 66 controller card a very long time ago (circa 1999) and it worked well enough. I imagine that a SATA controller card is similar.

Well sunnuva...
Sure enough... I just opened up my 4600 and it sure looks like I do have them.
I'll see what the deal is with theirs tomorrow!
Now I am trying to remember why we were under the belief that it didn't have any SATA.
Crazy... she had put this off for a while, so I was finally trying to finish it up... can't believe it may have had SATA connectors all this time.
Thanks, Father Xmas!

That bridge board will indeed work. Translating between sATA and IDE is easy.

converting the power connectors is easy.
Converting the data is a lot more complex but there are plenty of serial to parallel interface chips available that can handle that side of things.
You may want to confirm which versions of the SATA and IDE/EIDE standards are supported though.
Having said that if you have SATA ports on the MB you will be better off using them - you may need to enable them in the BIOS though.

This is a general PC tech question, I hope that's okay...
A family member bought a nice new Harddrive that is a SATA ii and their current motherboard only has IDE. So, they bought an adapter, but it doesn't work.
Someone mentioned that they need an actual controller card and not just an adapter/bridge.
I am really not positive at all. And I was looking to do this for myself, after I figure it out for them.
Can anyone answer whether an old Dell Dimension 4600 can use a SATAii Harddrive with an adapter like this or does it have to be a controller card like this?
Much appreciation for any help!
