Slotting Steadfast Protection +3 Def

I just hit level 27 and picked up a level 30 Steadfast Protection Res/Def for 15 million, which was about a third of my money.

Anyway, I'm not really sure where to put it. I'm Shield/Stone, so the only two places it goes are in True Grit and Tough. Many of the guides I've seen put it in True Grit, but some put it in Tough.

I'm leaning toward Tough, since True Grit is already heavily overtaxed if I want to throw special heals in there and still max out the resistance. However, few people seem to have gone that route, so I'm confused.

Don't forget it can also go in Deflection.

It's pretty much half a SO of resistance, and isn't a bad thing to put anywhere, but you're probably better off in Tough if you want to max the attributes of True Grit and Deflection.

EDIT: Doesn't matter where you put it, it will always be on. It's not a proc, it's a unique IO that functions like a set bonus. You'll have the bonus as long as you don't exemplar below level 27.

I slotted it in Tough on a DA stalker. I never run that toggle, but I always have the +3% defense.

If you're interested, here is a link to the wiki page talking about Invention IOs, Sets and Set Bonuses, Uniques, Proc's and how they scale within the game.

The information pertaining to your original question is further down the page under "Special IOs from Sets" and reiterates what Dechs has already mentioned.

There are advantages to putting the steadfast in either tough or true grit. In true grit the effect would be available at low levels. In tough the resistance portion of the IO would have greater effect.

This would be true if it were a proc, e.g. Numina's +Regen/+Recovery.

The Steadfast +3% Defense is a global IO, which provides a set like bonus at all times, until you exemplar more than three levels below that of the IO.

Whether it is in True Grit or Tough that you've taken at level 49, if the IO is level 30, you keep the bonus exemplared to 27 and no lower.

Okay, I think I understand. I get the +3% Def even when tough is not toggled, so it's just a matter of where it fits best in my build.

Thank you. I'll fiddle with the hero planner and see what gets me the best stats.
