Tips on BS/Shield Scrapper

Hello,

Made a new Scrapper and I went for this fun combo.

Now I'm looking for a nice leveling up build and some hints & tips on playing this one.

I hope I can get some help, thanks!

I'll focus on the SD side of things since I have SD characters but no high level BS. Grab phalanx in the 20's somewhere. It's a common final power pick eventually since it takes no slots, but leveling up you'll want that free 3.75% defense, you can respec to change that later. Grab combat jumping as well. Weave (and the entire fighting pool) can wait until later for leveling builds because without IO's, you won't have the endurance for it anyway. Grab a steadfast protection 3% defense IO while leveling as well, they're not too expensive, and if you put in some bids on the ones that aren't level 30 or 10, you can often get them really cheap.

Grab all your main toggles and status protection as well of course, so with phalanx, CJ, the main toggles, and steadfast 3% defense, you'll have about 32% defense to all, which means one small purple will cap you. At this point you can do x6-x8 and just keep a small purple on constantly. You'll kill plenty fast to get enough of those (and there's binds you can make to auto combine your inspirations into purples, I'm sure they're posted somewhere on this forum). I'd strongly recommend having hasten and build up as well. Don't worry about the fighting pool as much for leveling, grabbing powers like hasten and build up that let you kill faster will pay off much more for a leveling build. You can respec into weave later for your final build. I made the mistake of grabbing weave early, and it wasn't worth it. It barely mattered because I popped a purple anyway, and having hasten/buildup (which are hard to fit in early if you grab fighting) is way more useful.

Any pointers on slotting during leveling?

I think for BS: Acc, Dmg, Dmg, etc..?
And for SD... Endreduction and Def buffs, no?

Frankenslotting IOs that drop along the way and picking up some cheap ones on the market would be best. You will want a little of everything depending on the power being used. Be sure to pick up Parry and slot it for acc and at least one full recharge because the defense bonus will help your survive while leveling. You can always respec out if you build up your def enough with IO sets later.

While leveling I also like to slot acc and def debuff in Slice and Hack. The last three powers in BS I like to attach two-three slots of damage.

YMMV and good luck!

Skip Slash unless you feel you have lots of room left over for extra attacks; it's the least of your attacks.

Slot Parry like an attack with somewhat more emphasis on accuracy. Since you'll use Parry a lot while leveling, might as well get damage out of it while you're paying the animation time and end cost anyway.

I would slot damage to the ED cap (95% enhancement or better) in all my other attacks, though. My usual preference is end red, acc, dmg, dmg, dmg, recharge. Some people like more acc but you can get away with a little less since Broadsword debuffs defense.

Slice is a very good cone and will help speed leveling.

Don't hesitate to use Build Up as often as you can; saving it for a key moment has some utility but at some point that becomes "getting a lot less use out of it over time." For the same reason, burn inspirations liberally.

Thanks a lot, you guys!

Really love this community ^^

*edit*

Hmm, sometimes I like to have the feeling to work towards a build... does anyone has a sample leveling build?

Thanks

I tend to just wing it until the mid 30s. I think that different playing styles will lead to different results.

For example if I end up running with a group of people in a team and am leveling pretty quickly I tend to pick up a lot of attacks to help keep things down and then focus elsewhere. No tank or anyone who can take alpha well then I might grab Confront. Typically I love my defense so I pick up Parry and Combat Jumping ASAP. However, I will usually put off toggles until I get close to having Stamina (when it becomes an inherent power then after I two slot it). Early slots go to attacks to get in acc, rech, and damage. If I am primary damage and endurance becomes an issue then I will slot end reductions as well.

Pick up True Grit at Level 4. Parry at Level 8. Head Splitter at 32. Shield Charge at 35. Phalanx Fighting is an auto power and since I tend to run with teams I pick it up soon after it is available (between Levels 22 and 26).

With Ninja Run, Jet Packs, etc no need to pick up a travel power right away anymore and I find myself waiting until the first respec to work them in, if I go with any at all.

Warning: At the early levels you will be able to put out a lot of hurt. I had to get used to drawing a great deal of aggro, whether a tank was on the team or not. Keep this warning in mind when you hit the mid-30s because even with just SOs you can put out a lot of hurt.
