Warner Bros. has signed on Doug Liman to direct the sci-fi action film “All You Need is Kill“, reports Variety. The film is being produced by 3 Arts Entertainment, and is based on a 2004 Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Dante Harper wrote the adaptation for the upcoming movie version.

The film will be about a new recruit in a war against an alien force. He dies in battle and ends up in a time loop and wakes up alive and well in the past. The cycle then repeats, but he remembers everything and soon his skill as a soldier grows. He then starts to find a way to change his fate.

Here’s the official description for the novel that the movie will be based on:

Quote:
There’s one thing worse than dying. It’s coming back to do it again and again… When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On the 158th iteration though, he sees something different, something out of place: the female soldier known as the ***** of War. Is the ***** the key to Keiji’s escape, or to his final death?
Liman has been rumored to helm “All You Need is Kill” for several months following the delay of a new adaptation of “The Three Musketeers”, which he signed on to direct. Liman’s credits include Fair Game, The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Jumper. He’s also signed on to direct an indie film called Attica.

According to a previous report from HeatVision (when Liman was not yet confirmed to direct), part of the deal for the film is for it to start filming soon and production could start as early as Spring 2011.

I like it. It sounds like Starship Troopers meets Groundhog Day. I've never heard of the book before, but for those interested, the novel has been translated into english last year and should be readily available.

EDIT: Oh the forums censored out the female soldier's name in the quote. It's the B word, you know, meaning female dog. >_>
