Ice Storm question on an Ice/Fire tank

Is Ice Storm from the Ice Mastery APP counterproductive to a tank? Will the bad guys attempt to run out of the Ice Storm? Is the dmg worth the hassle? Will I have to work twice as hard to keep them bunched up, especially since I don't have Taunt (and the -range that comes with it)?

Am I better off going with Pyre Mastery for Fire Ball instead? Any other APP pros and cons?

My Ice/Fire Tank is currently sitting at 43 and already has Block of Ice on his way to take Ice Storm. But the above questions popped into my head today and now I'm considering respeccing out of it if need be.

Thanks!

If you can keep the enemies in the AoE, then it's a great power. However, enemies will try to run out of the area. As a /Fire Tanker, you have few mitigation tools to help you keep the enemies in the AoE. However, Ice Storm does have a slight -runspeed effect, and combined with the -speed of Chilling Embrace, it should slow the enemies down enough to do a lot of damage to them.

Still, if you're looking for a thematic APP to take on your Tank, and to help deal more AoE damage, then the Fire APP is likely better. Fireball does less potential damage, but is up much faster, doing more damage over time, usually.

Thanks Aett. I think I'll try out Ice Storm before burning a respec. This tank has turned out to be very enjoyable, and with minimal investiture, has become quite resilient. Off the top of my head I think he runs at 38% S/L defense before factoring in Energy Absorption. He's far from min/maxed so I know that 38% can be much higher with the right IOs.
I don't plan on running +4 TFs with him so as long as I can get close to softcap before EA, I'm good. I want him to pump out the damage as well, and he does very well right now.

Do the other APPs offer anything of better value to an Ice/Fire tank?

If you take your Ice Tanker villain-side, some of the PPPs might interest you. Mu Mastery has Electrifying Fences and Ball Lightning for more AoE spammage. And Soul Mastery has Gloom, Darkest Night (foe -dmg, -tohit), and Dark Obliteration to offer.

Tempting but probably won't go Villain with my tank. I'm actually trying to get out of redside with my 50 SS/WP/Soul Brute.

Another hiccup last night. I hit 44, went to pick up Ice Storm....needs 2 powers from Ice Mastery before picking it. D'OH!

I smell a respec. I can't justify two wasted power slots, and face it Block of Ice (don't need a hold) and Shiver (CE provides me with all the slow I want) are two powers that I don't necessarily need.

That being said, I'm wondering what to pick up. Here are the powers that I don't have that would round out my build. Combat Jumping (I picked up the 3% def IO last night and am now at 41% before EA), Hasten, Taunt, Hibernate (oh crap power), Fire Breath, Permafrost (meh), even contemplated Maneuvers for the extra 2+% of def.

What to do....

I have Ice Storm on my tanker. I am planning on a respec soon to get riid of it. It does moderate damage and takes a long time to recharge. This is just personal, but I love Block of Ice. On AV's I usually start with that, SC, FS, and continue the onslaught. I can usually take down an AV solo with this set. I seldom use Ice Storm as most of the time the villians just run out of it anyway.

Hasten is a must for just about any build. I would personally take Hibernate as well.

I love Ice Storm, but then my tank that has it is Ice/Axe. Chilling Embrace, Icicles and Axe's knockdown makes a huge difference with regard to everyone running out. If you've got an Ice/ tank, take it and don't look back. You have the tools to keep an entire spawn in the storm long enough for the damage to take hold. Slotting Ice Storm for slows, recharge and damage (two levl 50 IO's each) should bring it back up in just over a minute, do good damage, and - in conjunction with Chilling Embrace and Icecicles, floor their movement speed. They won't be running anywhere.

With little more than Hasten, it's up every 8-man spawn I solo, and a quick build up/pendulum/whirling axe will just about finish off everything but resistant lt's and bosses. With /fire as your secondary I'm fairly certain you could melt faces before the vast majority of them get out.

Aaargh...just when I thought I had decided on respeccing it out you had to go and make a well thought out argument FOR Ice Storm. Curses!
