Your Computer Needs to be Restarted
Nearly every time there are "kernel panics" during heavy memory usage, the problem is either a disk error or bad RAM. Try running Disk Utility's Verify Disk to see if there are problems first. If you installed any 3rd party (non factory) RAM, remove it and see if the crashes stop.
If neither of those help it could also be caused by something that loads at startup. That will take a lot more troubleshooting to figure out.

Disk Utility reported no errors with the disk. There is no non standard RAM installed - 8gb straight out of the box from Apple.
There are no login items starting automatically with my account.
As far as I can see there is nothing 3rd party running at all. Just OSX components and COH.
Dont see how it can be anything other than COH itself causing the problem. Most of the time when this happens i just get the black line scrolling down and the system locks up.
Have only seen the computer must be restarted error twice, usually just locks without warning.
Have installed all available OSX updates. Was worried that perhaps it was overheating - back of the unit was REALLY hot, but running a program to turn the fan speed up does not solve the problem either (although the computer is much cooler to the touch)
Has anyone else encountered this problem with the new imacs?
Any suggestions?
Launch Console (Applications > Utilities) and click Show Log List. Work your way through the list - you're looking for a section called PanicReporter. There should be at least one log in there reporting on your last kernel panic.
Those logs are usually short - copy and paste its contents here. Don't delete the log afterward, because if something's wrong Apple will need it to diagnose what happened.
While I read that, run Software Update - there was a graphics update released a few days ago from Apple, that might solve the problem too.

Thanks for your help with this. Have already downloaded the latest graphics update yesterday. It seemed to improve framerate - but did not stop crashing.
Hope that log means something to you - means nothing to me lol

The rest of the extensions are all from Apple or fairly benign, so once you check those 3 above you should be free of panics after that.

Wow - what can I say?
Thanks so much for your help on this.
Will remove the x86 thing for temperature monitor tonight. Might as well take off rowmote for now as well just to be sure.
Need to keep the belkin one because its for the N52te Speedpad -a must for me for City of Heroes
Fingers crossed that this does the trick, but either way want to thank you for your help on this.
Been getting random freezing and locking up for a few days now.
A black line will scroll down the screen, the computer will lock up completely and then COH will display the message "Your computer needs to be restarted, press the power button until it turns off", repeated in multiple languages.
Sure enough the only way to resolve is to power off.
Had hoped that the Mac client would be more stable than the Windows one, but somehow it manages to totally lock up OSX as well lol
Anyone know what is causing this very annoying message?
Running 27inch iMac, 8gb RAM, Radeon 4850, 2.8ghz core i7
Is there something I should be doing or NOT doing to prevent COH from totally locking up my system?
