Servers were down for a looong time so I decided it was time I made the move from Paintshop Pro to Photoshop and I decided for my first attempt I would make my City of Heroes character, Nurse White and I thought I would share the results with you all!

Here is the finished piece

I have to say I am amazed at how much more awesome and powerful Photoshop is vs my 7 year old version of Paintshop, I wish I had made the move earlier!

Edited to make it more SFW Friendly.

Attempting coloring techniques in Photoshop.

Took a portrait, reduced it to lines and then recolored it. I'm slowly working my way to coloring pure line art.

The First Picture is a Photograph, The 2nd picture is half hand drawn and half filter effects.

Sorry, I take back my query--I hadn't realized you drew the entire thing from scratch.

Yeah, I thought that was just some filter work and a recolor on the eyes and lips. You dropped it to lines and rebuilt it from there? Impressive!

But yeah, slightly risqué.

I didn't draw the entire thing from scratch, like I said its a composite piece where about half of it is hand drawn and the other half photoshop magic. Wish I could freehand the line art but in all my 6 years of art in school I was never very good at line art so reducing it to lines was where most of the photoshop magic came in.

Originally I was following this neat Vector Art tutorial I found, but then I decided I didn't like the end result so I started to jazz it up and then used the wonders of Photoshop to make all imperfections less imperfect.

Generally I don't post stuff because because like the guy says to Banky in Chasing Amy, "So you're a tracer?"

The Eyes look a bit too real because they are, I was never very good with eyes so totally cheated and took the original ones in the photograph and tried to blend them into the picture.

The lips follow the opposite transition, I couldn't get them to look right so they were drawn on top of the original lips and then the original ones were removed. When I tried doing that with the eyes they looked slightly crossed and and doll like so after a few hours I gave up and cheated, but I should probably open it up again and do some more to the eyes because now I'm obsessing over them.

As for risqué, she is all perfectly covered! Absolutely nothing "bad" is showing anywhere and I have seen TV commercials and people in Atlas Park showing far more skin!

It's the "implied" nudity. I still remember characters being banhammered "back in the day" because they were wearing fleshtone tights, making them look like giant naked barbie and ken dolls.

I think that's the key part for me. The eyes look real, and are such a striking color that they absorb my attention from the rest of her features. Consequently, I'm mostly seeing the "cheat" part of the picture, and it colors my perception of the image as a whole. I imagine if my psyche was more drawn towards the lips, I would have a different opinion.

((If you look around on Deviant Art, you can find all sorts of line art that people put out there for others to color. And coloring is hard work. It really is. It's my least favorite part of producing a drawing.))

That's a really good idea Heroid! Although I think I need to play with Photoshop a lot more before I'm ready to take the training wheels off, but I really like how versatile the Program is, its like Powerboost but for teh arts!
