17" MBP Crashing

Hello everyone! This is my first time in the Mac Client forums, although not my first on the forums. I just got my brand spanking new 17" Macbook Pro last Friday. Here are the specs:

i5 2.53Ghz
4 GB of RAM
500 GB 5400RPM HDD (I am upgrading to 7200 tomorrow. I can't stand how slow it is.)
Nvidia GT 330M w/ 512MB of memory
Snow Leopard 10.6.3

Now running around Atlas Park I get a good 25fps at the native 1900x1200 resolution with these settings:

Physx: High
Particle Count: 40000
Character Detail: 100
World Detail: 100
FSAA: x4
Shadow Quality: High
Water Quality: High
Refelctions: High
Ambient Occlusion: Off (I knew better)

I could probably lower the resolution and get better fps, but I haven't messed with it too much yet and I'm pretty happy with how it looks. Plus in instance missions it's a lot faster. The problem I've been having is the random crashing. I know a lot of you if not all of you are having problems with this on the Mac Client. I've pretty much decided to install COH on my Bootcamp partition and just say forget it because I never had these problems with my desktop.

Here are some examples of crashing:
I log into Atlas Park and run around in zone for about 20 mins. I decided to check out my new SG's base. I zone in. Everything is great until I turn my toon around. Instantly I'm going about 1 fps average and then suddenly I see my OS X desktop. So I just think that I'll lower my settings before I try that again. Then my friend logs in so I decided to play the new i17 missions with him since I haven't got a chance to yet. We play all of them and finish the last mish to where the movie starts by the portal. Then, without any frame rate drop or any warning whatsoever, I'm suddenly back on the OS X desktop. that was a huge joy kill right there. I had never done this mish and then it crashes on the resolution of the story! Ugh! lol.

Is there anything that I should try to do to make it work better? From what Zombie Man said it seems that /reloadgfx doesn't work anymore. Plus I don't want to have to remember to do that every few mins anyways. Since I didn't have these problems in Windows it seems the best solution is to use Windows through Bootcamp... (I know blasphemy right?) If anyone has a better solution that maybe I haven't seen please list it for me. I hope maybe I didn't miss anything while searching.

Offtopic:

On a lighter note, I do have to say that this thing can handle graphics very well in Bootcamp. I ran the game Just Cause 2, which is a DirectX 10 game, and I ran it at 1900x1200 res with good frame rates. I did have to turn all the options down in it though. I'm going to try it tonight with a lower resolution and see what I come up with. Hopefully I can turn some of the options back up in lower resolutions. Just thought I would throw that out there. Can't wait to try some more games on it! What kind of games do you all play on your new MBP's?

The /reloadgfx command still works, but you need some practice knowing when to use it. Generally, you use it *after* zoning, but you have to get the timing right in knowing when it just starts to feel a little more laggy than usual. I can play CoH on the Mac for hours that way without a crash.

Eventually, though, the swap memory leak catches up and crashes the client - /reloadgfx just delays it quite a bit. The issue is on the bug list, hopefully at the top.

I hope so as well! I will try on Bootcamp tonight if I have time. I wonder if the graphics performance will vary from Windows to OS X. I guess this will be a good test. Thanks for the quick response!

Just an FYI it works great in bootcamp. That makes me happy. I was really worried about possible hardware problems or something. I usually think the worst in situations like that so I am always happy when its not as bad or prepared when the worst happens lol . I still hope they fix the Mac OS X version soon. I would like for it to work as good or better! When I play in Bootcamp my computer gets really stinking hot!

If playing on a laptop, I definitely recommend an external laptop cooler. Heat is always the killer on a laptop and probably was contributing to your crashes.

No, I've never had it crash because of the heat. It just gets hot while gaming. It crashed because the Mac OS X client is still just buggy. I've played it a lot longer and a lot harder on the Windows client in Bootcamp, and it's gotten a lot hotter than it did when I played on the Mac client, and still no crashes on Windows client. Thanks for the idea though. The thought crossed my mind until I thought about it and tested some more.

The MBP does a great job of dissipating heat. Unless you try overclocking it, not even sure if you can do it well or at all to an MBP, I don't see why anyone with an MBP would even need a laptop cooler. They are very efficient. The hardest mine works is in games like COH, Just Cause 2, Left 4 Dead & L4D2 and it never crashes due to heat. Even video editing doesn't get it that worked up.
