After activating the trial, you will need to download the game from http://www.cityofheroes.com/account/...of_heroes.html
This can take ages, I think I spent about five days doing it so hope your connection is better than mine
Then you can login in and create a character. You are going to have some harsh limits with trial, like not being able to level past 14, so its a good chance to make a fair few different characters and see what sort you like.
There are a lot of different servers, I play mostly on Virtue but everyone has thier favourite, so maybe check them out with different characters and see what community plays at your times on them.
Unlike other games, if you are from different MMO theres no need for the tank/healer/damage trinity and its also real solo friendly.
I really suggest you do the tuturials for both hero and villain, and saty away from farms - these will mostly be in AE (architect enternaiment) and level you faster than is benefical. Enjoy the start of the game when its new
