Question conercning Asus G73JH laptop and UltraMode

So due to my ASUS G2's LCD and battery connectors finally going out I have decided that it is time to upgrade to a newer model and just relegate my former laptop to "backup desktop" status. The model I am looking at now is the Asus G73JH. At $1600 standard it looks like a pretty nice deal. So what do you all think? Is this a good system for the cost, and will this system be able to handle some oh-so-sexy COX Ultramode?

Well mobile GPUs aren't as powerful as their desktop namesakes but I'd expect a mobile 5870 to be able to handle UM without too much trouble. Not sure if you'll be able to run it flat out full but it should still give good results. Looks like a pretty nice laptop. Buy me one too?

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

The specs look good, it's better than my workstation class laptop (Nvidia 7950 GPU, 2.2GHz Core2Duo, 4GB RAM) and that machine can handle limited Ultra Mode at 1680 x 1024; you'll certainly be able to run COH with at least some of the UM goodies, how much will depend on what you consider an adequate framerate.

Personally if a machine can't stay above 30fps then I turn things down... as someone who makes his living in video production it really bugs me when framerates drop below 30, and I prefer to keep them above 45. Yes, I can see the difference between 30 and 60, it's an occupational hazard.

COH has just been murdered by NCSoft. http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes

Awesome, thanks guys. Now all I need to do is decide whether I want to wait for the A1 model to become more readily available, or whether the A2 will suffice for me. I think I might just be impatient on this one and go for the more easily gotten A2.

The big trick I found if you want it to run Ultra Mode on a slightly older vid card is to adjust the "Max Particles" slider down. I moved mine down to 17797, and my NVidia G8600 card was enough to handle it after that. Haven't had any problems since.

Just keep an eye on the video memory specs - in this case it looks fine with GDDR5 - but some makers have a bad habit of putting in a nice core like the 58x0 ones but saving a few pence by putting in slow 128bit DDR3 instead crippling performance.
