Try using driversweeper to uninstall the old ones then restart pc then install the new ones.
I had this issue as well, my problem is that I dont think my card is compatible. May wanna check on that. (my card is Radeon 9550, so yeah)

Yeah, I donno. I uninstall, run driversweeper and reboot. Windows automatically loads the 8.7 driver after boot up.
did you get rid of the original driver so you can update the other one. I look at BillZBubba's guideish thing

Yeah I got rid of the stuff through the remove program, used driver sweeper and all of that. It still still loads 8.7 after boot up, wont let me cancel it.
Im done trying for awhile, really frustrated at the moment after about 20 reboots and downloads.
Believe me I know the frustration, I really do know the frustration.

I have always had Nvidia cards, but for my new computer I followed Xmas' $1200 shopping list (great computer) giving me an ATI card for the first time.
Everything works fine but I cant get the new drivers to install for my card, every time I try to down load and install the new 10.3 vers drivers it reverts back to the ones from the origional CD (vers 8.7).
I uninstalled the old ones before downloading the new ones and all of that but I must be missing something. Been working on this for a few hours and I just keep going in circles.
Any ideas?
Edit* FYI: I have Win7 64bit and the HD5850 video card.
