Win 7 graphic issue

Hey all,

Since a couple of weeks i've been getting some very weird bugs when trying to play CoH on Windows 7. I can play the game for as long as I want, but if I close it and start it again in the same windows session (no reboot), the game will stutter and something freeze the whole computer. If I can get to the close menu or force it down by the Task manager, the computer keep running without problem.

I normally play music at the same time and the music seems to follow the game lag. I have just reinstalled Windows 7 (bout 10min ago) thinking it was a driver issue but no luck.

Even weirder is that once I reboot, I can play the game without problem again but only for one session.

I pasted the info from COH helper (nice job on the updated version Zloth btw). I notice that it doesn't take the motherboard version .. it's an EVGA 780I and the graphic card (275) is also from EVGA. I do have a spare 8800 in but it's dedicated to PhysX and shouldn't interfere. I can always remove it if needed.

If anyone has any good idea as to the cause of this "bug" let me know cause right now i'm kinda lost.

Have you tried not using your music program and seeing if you can run multiple CoH sessions then? Also, check task manager after the game shutdown, perhaps the game exe doesn't completely turn off for some reason and that is your issue. Again, this might be caused by your music program somehow. Check that it too is fully 'off'. Also check your game sound settings. I assume you have them off but perhaps they're not and are fighting with the music program somehow, causing issues.

Just some ideas I thought of...

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

yeah I just tried after reinstalling Windows with everything as defaulted " in game sound, no external music .. etc" and still it worked well until I restarted the game (had to change the resolution).

BTW i'm using Winamp which never caused problem before (AFAIK)

Did you check this part? I have this exact problem with Microsoft Access at work. Sometimes when I close it, it SEEMS to close but if I check the Task Manager, it's actually still running.

yeah sorry forgot to add it to the reply. I checked the task manager and unless it's a sub-component still runnin, cityofheroes.exe doesn't appear in the list.

I tried playing other games yesterday (crysis, starcraft, Ut2004 and UT3) and none of them gave me any problem. This makes me think there is something in CoH that is either corrupt or isn't getting removed from the sub-process.

I tried launching the game while Procmon was running but wasn't able to see anything special that could cause this.

If anyone has any idea of where to look, please let me know.

Ok, I know you said you reloaded, but did you transfer your game from a backup or do a fresh full download? If you didn't do a fresh download, remove and try that. Also, no mods till we track this down please. Vidiotmaps and all that are generally fine, but just in case, keep the game vanilla for now.

I haven't tried a fresh install yet but I don't play with any mods. I noticed Zloth coh helper was finding something in the "mod" section but I don't remember using any.

anyway i'll go start the download and see where that gets me.

Well Vidiotmaps' map pack and Vanden's icon pack would qualify as mods and be the likely cause of those mod entries. But I'll take your word for it.

hum I did use Vidiotmap a couple years ago.. I didn't think I had been copying the same game folder for all those years (I reformat 2 to 3 times a year easily...)

Anyway I tried again after the game finished downloading and I still had the same issue except that it wasn't a complete lock of the computer just very bad lag whenever there was some sound. I downloaded an updated sound driver, and reinstalled the Nforce driver but I didn't have time to try again.

Well it looks like some progress has been made then. That's good.
