DP/Fire/Fire Build

Not having played a blaster at all before, I thought I'd finally give in and create one following along a theme. So I created Kerroscene (Keroscene was taken ): a pure fire mutant with incendiary guns... yada yada.

Anyway, I've been trying to work on a build for him, using some fire/fire builds posted here as a template, and I was wondering if you blaster experts could rip it to... err I mean, see if I'm heading in the right direction .

Now, I generally solo quite a lot, mainly to adapt to a new AT style of play, but also because I like to control the speed I play at - teaming doesn't generally give you that option much . With this AT though, I realised it was going to have to be more of a team player to ensure better survival odds.

That looks OK. I'd drop Burn and take FSC instead, personally. You probably want to find a slot somewhere for a KB protection IO. If you plan on using Hover, it needs at least two Flight speeds (two BotZ give enough enhancing along with a good set bonus). You could consider taking Hasten instead of Combat Jumping.

Why Blasters? Empathy Sucks.
So, you want to be Mental?
What the hell? Let's buff defenders.
Tactics are for those who do not have a big enough hammer. Wisdom is knowing how big your hammer is.

I think this is a mostly-great build, although Endurance is going to be a major issue, even with Consume.

I'm guessing that you're hover-blasting, given your power selections?

You're over the hard-cap on Resistance, so you can remove some slots there to hit 75% instead of 86-95% (which you're not actually seeing anyway).

Personally, I don't like investing enough to reach 15-25% Def and not take it further, so I'm not a huge fan of Weave and the Oblits as they stand. I'd either aim for softcap(s) or avoid the end-drain of Weave.

If you're looking for some more survivability, I'd suggest Bonfire over Burn. I'd also skip Char unless you plan to support it with Suppressive Fire's Hold.

I think you'll find the powers more effective and easier to use with a SS+SJ approach (and S/L softcap) rather than hover-blasting (and Ranged softcap), but YMMV.

Alternately, skip the Def approach entirely, get Hasten, and look for Recharge.

okay I finally got around to working on a better build for this toon. I have 2 in the making, after quite a few hours of fiddling about - 1 range def cap and 1 permahaste build.

I'm opting for the 1st build (range cap) due to it being a lot cheaper over all, but I wanted to throw it out there to see if any improvements could be made, or whether I've chosen some crazy power set options:

In my opinion, you sacrifice too much to soft cap ranged defense. I've moved around a few powers and slots to increase DPS, while retaining the same amount of defense.

You might consider going for a soft capped S/L-build instead as DP/Fire is best in melee:

Thanks for the info there Seraphael I've changed a few slots around from looking at your build. I've still kept him as a hover blaster tho. Unfortunately as far as the S/L build is concerned, because I want to keep the character thematic (all fire), achieving S/L with fire patron isn't going to work that well due to the lack of defense toggle power :/

btw is FSC better overall than Burn? From the mids stats burn seems to be far superior in dmg and endurance cost terms, as well as having the resist immobil - the only downside I see is the fact that you have to be near the ground, which for a hover blaster tends not to be the case . I also noticed with burn: "Afraid: 50 (tgt)" - is that a fear factor added in as well?

FSC>burn the only way you can get good damage out of burn is if you had someone to lockdown baddies for you since they scatter once you drop it.

Is empty clips just considered a substandard power, or did you drop it out of need for more defense? I'm working on a ranged/s/l softcap build for my DP/mental, and empty clips is one of the powers I'm thinking about dropping to add more defense, but along with psychic scream and rain of bullets it forms a decent targeted aoe chain.

The afraid:50 affect isn't a fear effect, it's the "omg run the hell away" effect that prevents mobs from just stupidly standing in the burn patch.

Burn is kind of ineffective as a blaster; it scatters mobs that you want to aoe, and you don't have the ability (either with melee powers or immobs) to hold mobs in it. Maybe combined with a slotted single target immob it could be an interesting way to kill bosses while staying out of line of sight.

Definitely would not take it over FSC.

Thanks for the answers - FSC it is then.

Oh and I dropped empty clips not only for a better def bonus, but also because I've not been that impressed with its attack - the cone is very narrow and the damage is meh, so its not even good for chaining ranged attacks at distance.

Thats just my opinion on the experience I've had using it on this toon though - and he's still a lowbie - would probably be best to ask someone who's kept it at higher levels.
