Crashing after yesterday's patch

I have been having smooth sailing with this game until after yesterday's patch. Now, I am getting graphics freezes that lock up the whole computer. Sometimes it happens 5 seconds into the game. Sometimes it takes an hour. I know it isnt the card or machine. tested out several other MMO and non-mmo games I have and they are having no troubles.

I'm at work,so I am unable to post my info. But I ran into the same exact thing last night.
In my case,I had just installed a new vid card (BFG GTX 285);I had some graphics oddities, so I went to Nvidia, got myself a new set of drivers and installed them. That cured the graphic glitches but not the lockups. I also had netgraph running-I saw HUGE blocks of green and in one case one big block of red. I thought maybe it was my network connection acting up but now I'm not sure...

Guy #1, try defragging.

Guy #2, make sure your computer isn't overheating.

Ran a defrag and virus scan over the course of the night while I slept. I too thought it might have been the drivers. Installed the new drivers that dropped from Nvidia yesterday. Still getting the lockups. Ran some pings and speed tests. My network and connection are smooth as silk. The lockup freezes the screen, the picture is still but distorted and sound goes into a continuous loop. Computer wont respond at all and I have to do a hard restart.

Same thing happened to me. I'm in the process of updating everything, so I won't know what worked for a while.

I'll ask again, did the new patch increase the base requirements to run the game or something?

After the lockups last night,I played Bioshock 2 for a hour or so-no hiccups of any kind. I also did a little Borderlands-same deal. If it's a heat issue, shouldn't it show up regardless of what I play?

edit: a detail I just now remembered. I ran the verify files thingie from the launcher before going to work this morning. It replaced one file-I think it was a .pigg file but I was still in "omg,it's early:am! I want to die!" mode,so I can't recall exactly.

Nope. System Requirements haven't changed.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

*shrug*

I updated every updatable thing on my computer, and I still lockup (sound loop with a graphics degrade) pretty much immediately upon loading the character select screen. Sometimes I'll get a popup that says the graphics card has been reset because it stopped responding, sometimes I don't. This -never- happened before yesterday's patch.

Agonus, you've not given us any real information to work from, so I'll address Swergen's post since I see half of the information we need.

I notice that you are using the 196.75 nVidia drivers, but the dates don't look right. You show a driver date of 2/22/2010, but the 196.75 drivers weren't released until 3/2/2010. Were you using a Beta version of those drivers? If not, it looks like the installation may be corrupted. I'd recommend downloading the 196.75 drivers again but don't install them yet, download and install DriverSweeper but don't run it yet, uninstall the nVidia video drivers and any of the display driver applications then reboot into Safe Mode. Once you are in Safe Mode, run DriverSweeper and have it remove any remaining nVidia Display Drivers, then reboot into normal mode. Once Windows loads, cancel any new hardware wizards or driver installations that try to start, then install the nVidia drivers that you downloaded earlier so that you have a clean installation of the Release version of 196.75 drivers on your system.

It's also possible that there is a conflict between those new drivers and the updates we got in the patch. You may want to try going back to an older driver such as the 196.21 drivers that were released in January, or even the 195.62 drivers that were released in November.

Since the 196.75 drivers were still being tested while the newly downloaded CoH content was on the Test server, it's possible that there is an issue that isn't noted in the Release Notes. If no one was using the beta version of the new drivers on Test, they wouldn't have seen a problem. The Release version of the drivers coming out the same day as the CoH updates makes me think this is a good possibility. In the Release notes for these new drivers, it is noted that the Cursor is broken again in these drivers for Vista, necessitating the need for the -compatiblecursors 1 tag onto the shortcut. If they break something that the devs have already fixed like the cursor in these new drivers, something else could easily be broken.

We also really need to see a HiJackThis log as well to see what else is happening on your computer. The CoH Helper report is only half of what we use for diagnostics, HJT is the other half. Usually the CoH Helper shows us what the problem is, but not always all of the problems.

For those other than the OP that are having this problem, please start your own thread and post a CoH Helper log and a HiJackThis log. The reason we ask for a separate thread when troubleshooting these issues is that sometimes the instructions we need to give are specific to one persons system only, and it can get very confusing to those with problems and those trying to troubleshoot when there are multiple people with different logs. It is very easy for anyone to get confused trying to keep multiple people's problems straight in the same thread, even though they are getting the same symptoms.

Ok, I followed your instructions. I wernt back to 196.21 drivers. The issue is still happening. Here is the updated information.
