you can crossfire across any brand. ATi isn't as strict about Crossfire cards as Nvidia is about SLI cards.
That being said... I'm not really sure how well crossfiring a 5870 to a 5850 will work. Yes, ATI's drivers will allow out, but you should probably read this: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1107/1/
The brand is mostly not relevant to this. You can Crossfire the 58xx and 59xx series together, but it's more recommended to use the 58(9)70's together. If you can swing a second 5870 it should work better than a 5850.

My husband has a Diamond 5870 ATI card. I want to buy him a 5850 to crossfire with it...
We want to know if the new 5850 has to be Diamond as well? Or could it be any brand name?
