Critique of a (Relatively) Cheap DM/SR
-You need siphon life. Drop either Smite or Shadowpunch so you can pick up this power. Slot siphon for acc/dam first, then you can consider healing.
-Don't slot brawl unless you're using it as a set mule.
-Picking up a steadfast 3% defense IO will save you a lot of work. It isn't that expensive on the market. Slot it in tough.
-There are cheap ways to frankenslot your toggles if you want. Look at serendipity for one. The def/end one should give you more effective numbers.
-The 6th bonus of crushing impact isn't that great. Slotting the 6th crushing doesn't do much for you. There are better options, like procs.
-Slotting combat jumping that much for def doesn't do very much. You add 1% more def using 4 slots. At the very least, drop the end redux. The power only uses 0.07 end to start with!
-Due to your set bonuses, practiced brawler is perma with only 2 rech IOs. If you exemp down and lose set bonuses, it won't be perma, but at 50, you only need 2. Keep 3 if you want to exemp down.
-If you can find a way to take Ghost Widow as your patron pool, picking up gloom would be a good thing. You can easily do this by dropping combat jumping and taking the slots from brawl.
-Touch of Fear is a great power. You're missing out by not slotting it.
There's a lot that can be done to this, but I think I'm just going to recommend you start fresh from the start. At the very least, you want siphon life.
I see a lot of what you're saying, Tonality. I think I worried a bit too much about folks who talked about the End issue, so I thought about slotting Brawl.
I also confess ignorance on Dark Melee. Never really delved into DM, so I'll certainly take your advice there.
Here's a second go-round. I come from the world of the soft-capped tank, so it's hard for me to let that go. That said, although this build has CJ for L49, I can move in Gloom. I just figure with Super Speed + CJ + Hurdle, I should be okay in most situations.
However, if you think Gloom outweighs the annoyance of running around until you get up a level (physical level), I'd certainly listen.

For leveling, sure, grab attacks. For a final build, you want gloom.
Got it. I also delved into Frankenslotting, as you suggested (yet another build...a work in progress). Found I could achieve the same results and increase damage potential for certain attacks.

I skipped Shadow Maul entirely on my DM/SR. I took Shadow Punch and Smite instead, and it has worked out pretty good for me. I hate using Shadow Maul on single targets, and I can't always line up the cone to hit multiples consistently, so the end drain isn't worth it for me, and if it misses you're flailing away for almost 3 seconds, during which you can't do anything else. Not a huge deal, I just don't really like Shadow Maul.
I took Gloom and Dark Obliteration, which have served me well, but I'm considering swapping them for Mu mastery to beef up my AoE output. I'll still have a ranged attack in Mu Lightning (which I actually like better than Gloom anyway, Gloom's DoT gets wasted a lot in fights, since I tend to punch my target before all the DoT is applied), and I get Electric Fences and Ball Lightning. The DoT in Electic Fences and Ball Lightning isn't an issue, because it is applying it to the targets I'm not actively beating on at the moment.
I suggest a little more recharge in Siphon Life. The sets you're using are fine, just switch around to get some more recharge in there.
Looks alright otherwise, but I don't have access to Mid's right now to check it out in detail.

To the OP:
Endurance is going to be something you may want to focus on now. You're going to have endurance issues quicker than you'll have dark consumption up again. If tough is just a mule, don't run it. However, if you want to run it, get a another slot in there to frankenslot some res/end bonuses, because tough has a pretty high end cost.
Midnight Grasp is an incredible attack. You're doing a disservice by not having it recharge quick enough. In general, focus on offense rather than defense now on your build - you've already softcapped yourself. The meager -to-hit you have is plenty without slotting.
Rectified Recticle is more useful on a typed defense build than a Positional. I wouldn't slot that in Soul Drain. You want to hit the ED cap for recharge on this power, get a decent amount of accuracy, and go from there. Since you'll lose your capped melee defense, consider either a multistrike set or obliteration in Shadow Maul. I'm guessing you'll go with multistrike. Then you'll have even more AoE defense, which leads us to:
You are well above the cap for AoE defense. Save some slots where you can and move them to more useful powers, like getting tough a little better slotted.
I'd take another look and tinker with it a little more. You can get some better efficiency without increasing the pricetag.
Before you switch, make sure to compare the base damage of Ball Lightning and Dark Obliteration. While I use the AoE of Elec Fences and Ball Lightning on a few brutes, you get better DPA out of Dark Oblit than Ball Lightning, and I cycle gloom on a secondary focus to deal with the DoT. |
Gloom and Dark Obliteration are great powers, but I'm choosing powers based on what I need for my particular build. Which at the moment is recovery, accuracy, and recharge. Posi's Blast provides all 3, so I decided to go with a patron pool that allowed me to slot more of them.

Just starting on Redside, really. Had a few villains, but never took them higher than level 30. That said, I wanted to explore it more since I'm hitting a rut in Blueside.
So, without a lot of Infamy, I have to budget more. The Oblits are expensive, but as the only high dollar set, I think that's doable over time.
