One Time...and One Time Only! Bayani Meets Thor's Assassin
My take on the "debate:"
I couldn't give a rats tail if person X has more art then me, if person Y has better art than me or if person Z has both.
There are several reasons behind my little gallery and none of them are competitive, that's a race I'll bow out of but happily watch and enjoy from the sidelines...
Mainly I just really like my trio of characters and enjoy seeing other peoples take on them. I'm pickier about Caemgen than the other two but that's been an evolution of artists putting their particular spin on him and me liking it so much I made it "canon" for him. If I was looking for different takes I would just find one artist I thought rocked and hire them over and over...
Almost hand in hand with enjoying different takes on them is enjoying seeing them in different styles. I love comic book art but I also really enjoy getting my trio done in other styles as well. I'm very very anxious to see how Nojitsu, a pin up style artist, handles Alpha... Or Caemgen. The fact that I'm getting her to experiment outside of her usual subject matter is a bonus to me I also hace a Caemgen piece in the works by Scarlethawk on DA who is a fantasy artist... Her stuff is so far from comics, and so far from demony looking guys, that I cannot wait to see how it turns out... (extra bonus on this one too in that commission price was all being donated to charity...)
then again, sometimes I do want that comic book look and feel... Sometimes I just want something that will be cool...
But at the end of the day, the point is I want art that I like. Some art I will like for it's quality. Some I will like for it's feel or mood. Some I mayike for it's unusualness, it's quirkiness or even just because of who did it and why...
All in all, I think we can all agree everyone, to one extent ir another, has their own reasons for their gallery, their own goals for it, and their own personal likes and dislike... And all are perfectly valid for that person.
So Bayami doesn't want me doing my hack job on his character? I totally respect that. Personally I love the job Jophiel did on Alpha but to each their own...
So TA likes to see pretty much anything done to his characters? I can totally understand that. Personally I would veto or object to some things just because they don't fit how I see my trio but then again they are just characters so *shrug* to each their own.
To sum up, I think the idea of their being one right or proper way to build a gallery is... Inane. (word of the day I'm told). Bayani's goals and path are not for me and neither exactly is TA's... But I love both their galleries and hope to get to see them both add tons more to them...
And finally, I've probably been pretty rambling and arguing what doesn't need arguing but I'm passing away time at work and this ate up a good chunk of it
I can see how it could come across as an unpopular stance as a collecter, but as bayani knows I can see the reason for it and I can support it. bayani takes collecting very seriously and strives to get better and better pieces that fit the way he sees he's characters universe, he also looks to keep he's gallery suitable for all ages. when you put so much effort into creating more then a gallery but a world that is exactly how you want it and someone comes along and draws something that you dont think fits and that will subtract from that world you were building then it would get you pretty down, So I understand the stance on giftart, guilt would make you feel like you have to show every piece you have been given even if it is dumpy or out of character, but in your head you'd be conflicted about it because you are adding this element to this world that is not reflective of it at all. so I understand that entirely and I think if others can see it that way it is not offensive he doesnt look for the girft art he gets, he stays well clear of the request threads and advertises on he's DA he doesnt want people to draw bayani without he's permission I think folks should respect that.
Honestly I don't think anyone goes to the effort that Bayani has to continue getting art of a high quality and in such a quantity and I dont mean that to offend anyone's galleries but having worked with him I know how much input he likes to have on a pieces development. while TA takes everything and will put it on display, which from an outside perspective could drag peoples opinion of he's gallery down if one was being honest, but I can see that to alot of folks getting art as a gift from folks can be sentimental in which case making the picture valuable just for the meaning of being gifted it by someone for nothing.
I can see art from a the more commercial angle as well as the sentimental side, being both an artist and a part time collector/creator. I've gotten to the point where I have seen enough people do average work on my characters (some folks I have even paid for) I am pretty much at the point where I will be looking to only give referances out to someone I think has the ability to pull it off and being involved in the creation process aswell

re: Quality over Quality & elitist art snobbery
Well, one of my personal goals when I started commissioning original comic book related art is to build what I would consider the best collection around. It might very well end up being a race of one, I'm not sure how many other people are competitive about it. I consider a very strong collection/gallery to be one that's looks professional, well-organized, and ties together a range of different techniques & themes in an aesthetically pleasing manner.
There are a number of different things I've done in an effort to achieve those ends...model sheets, networking, writing/finetuning backgrounds and stories, visiting museums, taking classes on art just to name a few. Senor Robin pretty much hit the reasons why I do what I can to discourage gift art. I prioritize quality because over time I know that if I continue to do what I do, I'll end up with a quantity of quality. Quantity came over time through patience. If that rubs people the wrong way, oh well. While I don't have the most gallery views or the largest collection of art, I feel that the collection on my dA account is arguably the best around.
Some may say that this approach isn't terribly supportive of artists. *shrugs* I personally think that you can support and encourage amateur artists through means other than simply buying their work.
