Most of the people that I've met in game tend to prefer to be in private SGs because the only major functionality of SGs nowadays is teleporter rooms (which aren't even required considering the huge amounts of other quick transportation that is available). Almost all of what would be accomplished with a guild in other games is accomplished with a global channel here.

The Perc committee is also having a Meet and Greet which might be a good place to check out the active SGs both red and blue side.
I think joining some active channels might serve your needs better--in addition to the Ultra channel (Hi PF!!!) I would recommend RF2009 and/or Freedom Elite. The latter would need an invite from myself or @coldfate2. All our global channels have late night/early morning activity--i know that i was recently on a late night shard TF from a PUG from these channels.
Oh, And freedom tf is our global channel for tfs that Alien One does a great job in keeping active, if tfs are your thing. Plus,that channel has PIE!!

Howdy all. First about myself -- I'm an MMO player of about 5 years, picked up CoH a few years back and played it for about a month before retreating back to SWG. Well, I'm pretty much done with SWG (playing another game for a few weeks really serves as a stark reminder as to how bad of a game SWG is) and I've been back here for about a month. My main character (Thundershark) is level 24, and I've got my defender up to 17 and a few other alts I'm pecking away at. I'm really looking forward to doing some high-end PvE and PvP and maximizing my gear and whatnot.
That said, I'd really like to find a SG that I can really sink my teeth into. These are some of the things I'm looking for:
* I'd like to find a pretty large SG. I've been in small guilds/clans/etc. in other games, and while having a small, tight-knit group is great and all, if they're not on, I find myself basically wandering aimlessly. While pickup groups seem to function much better in this game than in others, especially for lower-end stuff, because of the sidekicking, I'd much rather do guild runs.
* I really need something that's active late-night. I'm basically an East Coaster with West Coast playtimes (I generally get home from work around 1 a.m. Eastern).
* I'd love something really well-rounded with people who are into all aspects of the game. I was in a couple of guilds on SWG where I was basically the only person who ever participated in PvP with any regularity, and it kinda sucked at times.
* I have ventrilo, and I'm perfectly willing to download TS if need be. I'm also willing to put all my alts in whatever SG will have me.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction?
