Starting around yesterday my display driver would crash, maybe once or twice every few hours. Today it did it every 30 mins or so. and now it does it in firefox, or basically anything I'm doing very often. I have no clue what is going on but I am hoping someone has some suggestions?
When it happens my screen blinks black or sometimes some things turn purple or turn into squares then after it goes black for a second or 2 it is fine for a bit, but usually 3d stuff stops working.
In fact it didn't do it at ALL when i was writing this, but once i went to save my dxdiag file and copy it, it did it twice. Attached Dxdiag below.

what driver set are you using from Nvidia?

You might need to drop back to a 180 driver or try one of the beta releases.

I am using 195.62, and I have already uninstalled and driver clean and installed again but didn't help. Also tried dual booting into xp (an old install that i couldn't bare to get rid of so i dual booted windows 7) and it basically does the same thing only completely freezes the computer. I am probably going to buy a new video card tomorrow and hope it fixes it. (I work from home so i NEED my computer asap). I was thinking of buying a radeon 5870 because I like having big expensive things

If you are getting it across both OS's then we can rule out a software problem (mostly)...

have you run something like MemTest86 yet?

basic troubleshooting from this point. We can probably say it's hardware, but what hardware...

If you have another graphics card on hand, I'd test with that first before spending megabucks on a new card.

MemTest86 can check your system memory and your processor's internal cache. If you get errors, try downclocking your speed (if you are running an overclock). If you aren't running an overclock and you get errors, you'll be looking at new memory, a new processor, or maybe even a new motherboard.

I'd also check out a different power supply if you have one available to test with that can handle the load from an 8800

Not yet but I guess I'll try, this ram is fairly new since i went through a lot of memory problems a while back that froze my computer but it never created colors and stuff like this.

Edit: And now suddenly it's stopped, no clue why and no clue how long it's going to last =/. I'm still going to run a memtest now though.

I'd say, time to check inside the case, ensure your fans are all working, the dust bunnies are cleaned out, and that you've no loose power connectors. It's definitely hardware related, and by the way it came on like it did (first heavy-duty apps like games and then the simple stuff) it may be an overheat problem.

Grab a copy of SpeedFan and run it, see if it detects any temperature or fan speed or voltage problems.

Replaced my old video card, was on with BFG about my old one and they said i need to send it to them and etc, but I work at home so i dont have time to wait for all that so I upgraded. My new one is giving all kinds of trouble but it's more driver related.
