It’s a joke right? It has to be a joke. They can’t possible be serious, can they? Over on the thread where we were “re-educating” Mr Silverado I got some neg rep for my last post. This is perfectly reasonable and to be expected. I’m actually surprised I haven’t gotten more. But the comment that came along with it. It..and…I...but…I’m sorry I just have no words for that level of stupidity. Here, see for yourself:

What? I mean…What?

How could someone who even knows who MC Frontalot is be daft enough to attribute it to him and not back to its original source? Who ever left this comment needs to have their internet connection severed and their video card confiscated until they have played through Infocom’s entire catalog.

Twice.

Sure today is the first day of the rest of your life. But so was yesterday. And look how that turned out.

Is it bad that I know who Sir Paul McCartney is... but have never of this "MC Frontalot"? The name sounds like somebody who was in realty working on waterfront properties listened to MC Hammer on a regular basis.

I wouldn't call that sad. MC Frontalot is part of a what's typically referred to as the "nerdcore" music scene. I wouldn't say that any of the artists in that little niche of the business have exactly established themselves as household names with the level of recognition you get when you mention any of the Beatles.

But knowing who MC Frontalot is and not knowing that he's probably making a reference to Zork when he's rapping about a grue*?

I think we may have found evidence of one of mother nature's rarest of creatures: the poseur nerd. They walk among us!

*Though, I suppose it is possible he's actually going all the way back to Dying Earth.

To clarify I am not saying that MC Fronalot is in any way, shape or form comparable to Paul McCartney, and comparing his music to the Beatles’ would be like comparing a lit match to the sun.

Nor am I suggesting that anyone here should know who he is. I’m not a big fan and I don’t work in his marketing department, how popular he is, is his problem not mine. (Although to learn more the documentary Nerdcore Rising, chronicling his 2007(?) US Tour is currently available through the “watch now” feature on Netflix)

I’m just saying that to know who MC Frontalot is, to the point of recognizing his lyrics on sight, and not knowing they are a reference to and a direct quote themselves from the Infocom classic text adventure ZORK is akin to people knowing who Paul McCartney is and having no knowledge of the Beatles.
