Resistance
Fire, cold, smashing, etc. are done in separate "ticks" of damage. i.e. When you get hit with an attack from Energy Blast, you will see two numbers pop up. One is energy damage and the other is smashing.
If you have energy resistance, but no smashing resistance, the energy portion will have your resistance applied, but the smashing portion will not be resisted at all.

Could someone explain how exactly resistance works. I fully understand defense and needed to know if it followed the same rules. Ex - If you get hit with fire damage and smashing damage and smashing resistance is higher than fire then will that be the number used for damage resistance or are both taken into effect.
Thx! |
Your character has 30% fire resistance and 10% smashing resistance. You get hit by an attack that does 100 points of fire damage and 50 points of smashing damage. You actually take 70 points of fire damage and 45 points of smashing damage.
If you get hit by an attack you have no resistance to you take the full damage.
It's actually pretty simple. Whenever you take damage of a type that you have resistance to that damage is reduced by the resistance.

It's important to keep Defense and Resistance in mind when figuring out damage.
Defense determines whether you got hit or not. If an incoming attack has three components (e.g., smashing/energy/AoE), then if you have any Defense against any one or more of those components, you take the highest Defense number, and that will be the one that determines if you got hit.
If you do get hit, then Resistance comes into play. If you have different values of Resistance versus smashing and energy, then each Resistance value is used against each component. Smashing Resistance reduces the amount of damage of the smashing damage and Energy Resistance reduces the amount of damage of the energy damage.
So, in short, with Defense, the highest applicable Defense value is used.
With Resistance, each applicable Resistance value is used.
