Question about Burn (FA)

So I have had Burn for a few levels now and have noticed that when I first drop the patch, the damage ticks for X damage. The mobs will flee, but usually come back after a second or 2. When they do, burn is ticking much lower. I didn't know if it was some feature of the flee mechanic or not, but I just picked up Midnight Grasp and noticed the same damage drop off even when I immobilize something and it can't flee.

Now I haven't read up much on Burn (other than the great herding days long passed), but I have never seen a power do this. It doesn't seem to matter what enemy group it is, what buffs I have going or whether they can run away or not. The first 2 or 3 seconds is one number and then it drops off.

I haven't sorted through a MG/Burn test to add up the total damage done. It's possible it could be doing the correct damage with the first few seconds being front-loaded, but I figured I would just post and see if anyone has any input.

Thoughts?

I always thought it was fury decay. Pseudo-pet burn is granted the damage buff from your current state, but as soon as you drop it, its fury level immediately begins to decay at the normal rate.

Not sure about that, but it was always my assumption.

Be well, people of CoH.

It is the Damage buff from Fury wearing off. Burn is a pseudo-pet and inherits the Damage Bonus and Duration from Fury. Since Fury works by being a short, reapplied duration Damage buff (2 seconds I think) Burn will lose the inherited damage buff from Fury after about 2 seconds.

If you trigger Build-Up, leave it for 5 seconds and then trigger Burn you can cause a similar effect. The damage will include the inherited damage buff for the first 5 seconds and then lose it.

It was a bit annoying for me because I got very excited checking the build in Mids and at 75% Fury Burn promised to do massive damage altogether, and my Stone/Fire is pretty good at keeping things in it. But Mids was assuming a full Fury Damage Buff for it's entire lifespan which isn't what actually happens.

You can use the Rikti Target Dummies in the RWZ as handy targets for testing this out on.

I was wondering if there wasn't something like that going on, I noticed that the "drop" wasn't as severe with lower fury levels. So is this considered a bug or a "feature" of fury and pseudo pets that will not get changed?

I've a feeling it's not considered a bug really, mainly because Tanks and Scrappers share the same pseudopet. So in terms of balance between the 3 different versions I'd reckon the devs would just leave it alone and consider a feature, but maybe not one that was intended or thought about when Pseudopets inherited damage buffs in i7 or i8.

It means that slotting for damage is probably more important in Burn than one would normally consider for a Brute. I'd slot for damage over recharge in Burn.
