Gaming laptop help

Hey techies!

Pretty knowledgeable with desktop PC's, laptop not so much.

I have been given a budget of up to $2000 for a gaming laptop. I only play Co* at the moment so that's my main concern. I have to retire my "ugly" PC tower since the little one on the way is taking my man-room. The "ugly" PC tower is not allowed on the telephone desk.

Any suggested places to go to get a gaming rig?

Any suggestions for a specific laptop that will run Co* full blast?

Thanks in advance!

If you're not an "I hate Dell" guy, take a look at the Studio XPS 16.
2.13 Ghz (base) CPU
ATI Mobility Radeon 4670
6GB of RAM
True 16" 1920x1080 Screen
3 Year Warranty
Blue Ray optical
$1864 + shipping

If you want to step down from a Blue Ray optical to a standard DVD player, you could bump the CPU from the 2.13Ghz to a 2.8Ghz and the price'll be $1889.

That should fairly well stomp all over CoX.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Should I be an "I hate Dell" guy? I have heard in the past they weren't so great. Any pro's or con's with a Dell in 2009?

Thanks for the suggestion will look in to it.

Anyone else?

Got'cha. Not sure how much I would use support in the first place. So I may give them a go.

Now, Alienware...now part of Dell. They too in the past have had the love'm hate'm thing.

Thoughts..found a nice Alienware rig for just under 2k and one just over 2k.

Alienware is not worth your time. It's overpriced for what you get.

I very strongly and highly recommend the Hewlett-Packard HDX 16t and HDX 18t. These two are without question the best value on the market by leaps and bounds right now, and both come very nicely configured for under $2000. Both are hundreds of dollars cheaper than the Dell with equal or better specifications.

The HDX 16t "Recommended" configuration at $1300 is perfect for CoX, though you will need to be absolutely certain to select the Free upgrade to the 1920x1080p when customizing (it's not selected by default, but is a free upgrade currently,) and remove the Norton garbage software (-$49.00) - Microsoft has a better product for absolutely free now, that doesn't turn your system into a sloth.
I'd also recommend upgrading the battery to the 12 cell (+$49.00) and considering an extended warranty with accidental damage, but those are definitely personal choices.

Most of the time that I see consistent problems with a Dell computer, it's because of one simple thing. The people bought the cheapest piece of crap computer that Dell makes and expected server stability and performance from it.

Then again, I get the same thing from people that bought the same type of system from HP, Gateway, IBM/Lenovo, Toshiba, etc.

My Dell laptop bought in late 2002 still runs the game fairly decently for such an old machine, but when I bought it I topped out the CPU, video card, HD, and screen (for what they had at the time). I've since topped out the memory and replaced the HD (simply to get a bigger drive and dual-boot for gaming and work systems).

Basically, if you do go Dell, or HP, or Toshiba, or anything else, research the parts, customize the systems to best suit YOUR needs/desires as much as you can but don't buy into the over-priced name hype (I won't mention any names) when you can get a similar system (or even the same system parts-wise) elsewhere for less.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
