Crazy Frequent Freezing for 10+ seconds

so basically what's been happening is I'll log into COH, and the entire client keeps freezing on me for 5-20 seconds at a time...sometimes I can still move the mouse, sometimes not. it "seems" to happen less frequently when I'm playing solo or when I'm away from the team. Mind you the FIRST thing I tried was to turn my graphics options down to MINIMAL and there was no change in the frequency in the freezing. I updated my video card and sound card drivers to the most recent their respective websites could locate for my particular hardware...No difference noted. I tried safe mode...no change. I even went as far as to re-install windows and COH to a separate HDD and tried playing it on a fresh install...same thing...I'm pretty sure it's not my network because AION and WoW work flawlessly until I get into a busy town when the typical "too many people moving around to transfer through my 1.5MB down cable modem" lagging happens. I'm out of ideas to try and friends are in the same boat. Short of buying a new computer (which I certainly can't afford right now) The only thing I know of to do is to let my account expire again since I cannot play when the game freezes so frequently...I can't even finish typing a sentence for crying out loud! :-(

here's my CoH Helper:

First, you only have 1MB RAM. You're probably going over that and using virtual memory where a lot of memory is being swapped onto and off of your hard drive pagefiles. That slows down the game and can freeze you as textures are being loaded.

A quick fix for now is to create a macro to keep clearing out your texture memory like so:

/macro ugf "unloadgfx"

And use it before and after zoning.

Better would be to get an extra RAM of memory. It's relatively cheap.

Also, speaking of the hard drive, you're down to 6% which often makes Windows choke and wheeze trying to use a drive with that little memory left. Clean it out and/or move stuff off of it to the other (virtual) drives. To clean out your hard drive:

1. Go to control panel and then Add/Remove Programs and get rid of any programs you don't need any more.

2. Go into Windows Explorer (not the Internet Explorer) and right click on your C: drive and chose Properties. Under the General Tab, you'll see a button for Disk Cleanup, run it and get rid of deleted (recycle bin) and temp files.

3. Under the General Tab, make sure Indexing is not selected. Unless you need to do quick searches of your documents on a regular basis, you don't need this. It may take a while to propagate the un-indexing to all the sub-folders.

4. Go to the Tools Tab and click on the defrag button. Run the defragger. It may take an hour or two to defrag. Make sure the computer doesn't power down during it (you'll find power options where you change the screen saver -- right click on desktop...).

Also, while your CPU and graphics card are OK for CoH, you won't get good performance with all those other programs loaded in the background. Shut them off, or delete them, or keep them from starting on start up. If you cut and paste your HiJackThis into this site: http://www.hijackthis.de/ and hit Analyze, you'll see what all those entries are doing. Go to this site to understand you HiJackThis report:

Well that 6% on the drive COH is installed on equals over 23GB since it's a 344GB partition...if windows chokes w/ 23GB of space on a drive, then I'd have more than a few choice words for Microsoft LOL Otherwise my main system drive has over 3GB of free space. And even still, on the fresh windows install I did on a 50GB partition, installed COH fresh on...still has 68% of free space...and there was still no noticible difference in performance...still freezing up like a kid who just got caught w/ his hand in the cookie jar.

Here's the Hijack from the fresh windows/coh install: (strictly windows XP SP2, drivers, and coh installed:

Simple answer. You don't have enough RAM. Simple solution. Install more RAM. CoH will run much smoother with 2 GB of RAM. If your motherboard can support (and you can afford it) put in more.

The problem is that the system is swapping unused data from RAM to disk to free up space for data that is going to be used. The freeze period is the Operating System read and writing data from/to the system swap file. The bottle neck is that hard drives aren't as fast as RAM for reading and writing.

Well thank you two for the help...last night I once again heard the sound of a nun slapping her yardstick onto the table as hard as she can, and THIS time I could track the sharp sound to my computer case rather than from my glass terarium, and this morning the video card would not wake back up...upon closer inspection, 6 of the 10 capacitors on the video card had blown their tops...so apparently it's been the video card all along. Something I would have noticed earlier if the caps had been facing upward where I could see them when looking down into the case instead of having to flip the case on its side...so I have a friend who owed me money buying me 2 new nVidia 8500 GT cards and 2GB of RAM to install in the next couple of days :-D

YAY! I can play games again!!!!

Once again thanks a ton for your help!! :-)
