"Real" damage resistance numbers?

I was just wondering how the amount of damage an enemy does on you relates to your damage resistance. While playing my SS/Inv tank today the damage resistance numbers often reached about 75% yet the actual damage received obviously wasn't being reduced by that amount (that would be a tad unbalanced). Is there some other calculation that takes place behind the scenes?

I think 75% resistance really does stop 75% of incoming damage (and FWIW so does ParagonWiki).

Bear in mind that different types of damage are resisted separately though, and while an Inv/ tank could certainly have 75% resist against s/l damage it's likely to have a good bit less against all other types (and zero against psi, barring set bonuses!).

Ah I see, thanks Standoff I didn't think about all the different types of damage out there. I've gotten used to playing either characters with no resistances like blasters and controllers or using regen as a scrapper. Tanking is a bit of a new venture for me though I have been playing quite a while.
