The All Rounder: Freddie Flintoff vs T Rex

First off let me position myself that that you get where I'm coming from.

I really enjoy casual PVP. I love zones, I love Arenas. Teams and Solo.

I love PVE. I love the game's content and even after 2 years I still take immense pleasure from all aspects of this game.

But, there seems to be a fundamental incompatibility between the casual, and the dedicated PVPer.It seems that to be successful in one aspect of this game, PVE or PVP, you have to build your character to fit, and thus put yourself at a severe disadvantage in other aspects. This seems especially true in PVP where some powersets are considered to be a definite "no no" - the best example of this might be travel powers - and I've been laughed at for having fly & hover, yet they suit my character from a style and RP perspective. To have to spec them out would fundamentally alter my character but without Superspeed and Combat Jumping I seem to be at a serious PVP disadvantage.

That's one example, and there are others... some more ridiculous than others. Scarlet's an elec/elec/elec blaster and people complain because of holds and end drain. Hello!? It's what she does!

Slotting becomes increasingly vital with the right IOs making the difference and costing fortunes wheras the old days a 3/2/1 SO combo would work perfectly in PVE. (Arguably still does.)

Is there a place for the all rounder, the person who tries to put a boot in both camps or has it become an either/or thing? My experience with FNFC and similar events seem to think it's the case. I can stand my ground against most non-dedicated PVPers but then along come the guys known for PVP and smack the rotund female has an aria in full swing.

I guess it's possible that I am in that odd place - better than most butnot good enough to be a dedicated PVPer, and frankly even if I were that arrogant to admit it I honestly don't feel that good.

Thoughts my friends?

There is a place for the all rounder and thats the Zones. Dont listen to the "facts" that get chucked around the Zones; most are just too accustomed to the way they play and anything out of the ordinary is immediatly subpar.

Superspeed/+Superjump is as you know, the prefered Travel Powers of choice, but thats only because they get you from Point A to B the quickest, without much hassle. In Zones especially, Fly can be used to great effect. I say that because my main PvP character had it as his Travel Power, though he did have Superspeed to fall back upon.

I wouldn't sacrifice anything in the build since there sadly isn't any point unless you want to go the full nine yards. As you've said, some combos of powersets are infinitely more sought-after than others, but i can see your blaster getting in "kills" so i would be happy.

Also, Arena is open to everyone, even with those with a PvE build. There's always a few players around who would happily share there knowledge and answer any questions you might have, or just post it in this forum.

Yeah i can understand where you are coming from. IMO fly is not a viable power as theres soooo soooo many -Flys out there. As SingMC said you would need a back up to this either Phaseshift to protect against possible attack whilst grounded or SS. Personally on a squishy i always take SJ as a first travel power for the CJ and Acro - both universal and are useful in both PvE and PvP.

The other thing i found more recently as not PvPing as much in the arena i spec my toons for a percific PvP Zone. ie Warburg. I slot as much as i can universally in both PvE and PvP more prioty on PvP up to lvl 40. Then the remaining levels I spec towards PvE.

Personally i feel they should introduce a 2nd Build to every toon. Give them a PvP Spec build and a PvE Spec build that would solve most problems but would also cost alot more to the players in a IO sense.

I like this idea but I think it might be difficult to manage.
