Originally I was just like the rest… A typical Irish guy in an all Boy School… (Yeah I know it sucks...) My band had been practicing all night and I was wrecked.
My mam woke me up at 7:55 - shouting “Michael!” from the stairs - which wasn’t at all close to how much sleep I needed. It was the last few days of school and everyday I PRAYED for our principal to allow us to leave for studying (Like I’m doing much of that). Today, I got breakfast as per usual and watched ‘Laguna Beach’ because it was the only fractionally good thing on at that time, and then packed my bag. I grabbed my bike ready to leave. Checked Swipe Card and keys and cycled up to my friends house where I would usually walk up with them, but today…I was late. I checked my watch. It was 8:40 and realised they had left.
I wasn’t worried, I’m never late and it only takes 7 minutes to cycle to school. I headed through the park. Suddenly, a loud crash was heard at the north side of the park... I cycled through the grass to see what the hell had just happened. There was a large crater. I was in shock. Thinking “Ok...This doesn’t normally happen. Right?” in my usual sarcastic tone. I climbed up the rather large hill, careful where I stepped making sure not to get my foot stuck in one of the many cracks. A blue aura was radiating from the ground.. I attempted to pull out the rock that was glowing, but got shocked. But not as if by electricity, it was a good shock – sent an unusual sensation through my veins – I grabbed hold of the rock with my two hands this time, and managed to pull it out with a grunt. As I held it, I felt a rush of adrenaline piercing through me, I felt different. I shoved the rock in my bag and legged it out of the crater as I noticed people looking peculiarly around the park.

I grabbed my bike and hurried to school, road works were a nuisance, blocking me from crossing until the construction worker saw fit…. I made it to school with some time left even after the event that had just passed. I locked my bike, swiped in and met my friends I was supposed to meet up with at our usual point. “Unusual for you to be late, musta been that band practice, one whole hour past your bed time and you get wrecked” Conor said, is his normal tone, I looked at Dean, and asked him what homework we had, “None” - “Yes!” Thank god. I didn’t do any homework that night I hoped that I would’ve been lucky enough to get away with it, as it could be our last day. But whether or not, we’re off tomorrow wouldn’t matter, because us three were going to England, Newcastle for a band competition, I was ecstatic. I love playing guitar and with Dean – our drummer and Conor – our vocals. I heard we were battling a girl band... That’s what I was really happy about. As an all boys school, I have to go out to my friends to see girls, which I do quite a bit, just not as much as I’d prefer.
Gerard, another friend who sometimes drops by our little booth on the hall came over, and wondered how my hair had got so long in the past day saying, “Dude, did you get some hair extensions” He said partially joking, although I don’t know a lot of people who could just say that and be still looking serious. The plastic protecting the pictures of past holidays was reflective enough for me to notice my hair was down to my ears.

As I ascended to the hell hole that is maths, I hurried to my seat so that Conor wouldn’t take it as mine had a better view of the board….Not that I had intended on paying much attention- in any class for that matter – but its still annoying when someone takes my seat. Conor took his seat, we pulled out our books, and the teacher began to correct Tuesday’s homework as he had been out a few days. Conor began drawing weird pictures as I was drawing my little anime heads and what not. He whispered to me to “Look at this” pointing to his book. He had drawn a girl’s head. It was terrible. But he does it for the joke anyway.. Which does get annoying after the…100th time…

As 12:19 came and one minute later the “Bong” of the bell rang rattling in my ears. I leapt up and packed my bag rushing down the stairs to my bike. I had got to the cross roads where that damned construction worker had been waving his arms in an odd manner, signalling to the cars. I had waited there 5 minutes shouting at him “Hello! There are people who need to get home” it had been enough. I felt an odd surge in my legs, without thinking I had leapt out of my bike, looking down onto all the houses, I was waving my arms about like that construction worker in horror, “What the hell is going on, how am I doin’ this. Help me!” I had looked down and saw a bouncy castle in a house nearby, I pushed with all my might to thrust my weight to control the jump. I had been screaming my lungs out the whole few minutes I was in air and by the time I dropped I was out of breath, and as I expected to be crushed by the velocity of my fall, I had landed with minimal harm. I heard noises come from inside the house, and the rattle of the doorknob. I grabbed my bag from the ground.

I ran home, looking back every few seconds to make sure no one had saw what I done.
I remembered the rock I had found. I studied it in my room. Tossing it from one hand into the other thinking “What could it be..?” The aura was fading a little bit more… I figured the more I held it, the dimmer the light got... I decided to hold it until it was all gone. See what else could happen to me… I began trying various movements throwing my hands out in front of me. Nothing. I had stared at the pencil I placed on my bed locker to see if (By chance) I could be able to lift it with my mind. To my surprise… Nothing... Who would’ve thought? But when I tried to lift it with various hand gestures... It hovered over the table... I wasn’t sure at first, but when I let go, I heard a tiny *clunk* as it fell and began to roll off
I had decided to not go into school… It was a just cause right…? If I could harness my powers, imagine how much people I could save. I told my brother that I was sick and stayed at home. I began trying various things, I started to notice that after I lifted the pencil up, I could only put an object down, and visa-versa. I decided to see what else I could do. If any… I had remembered my bike, it was left at the crossroads, I went downstairs and stood out the door, took a big breath, and leapt miles into the air, I jumped into the park and ran across the road, careful not to let anyone see me. I saw my bike. Jumped again and leapt on top of a near by rooftop. I put my hands out, and the bike rose from the ground, I was lucky the roads were not busy at that time, and the workers were to busy too notice. I levitated it home and into my house…

I read a lot of comics (Well not that many) and realised I needed a costume… But I wasn’t into spandex…Tried it when I was 5 didn’t like it then. Not going to like it now. So I grabbed some clothes and a conventional mask- well people will still notice me if I don’t – when I looked in the mirror, I had noticed. I couldn’t see my head… I had grown! This was great. I hated being average size. I wanted to be taller…

That day I had packed to go for England, when I did, I packed my bag with my costume.. I thought it looked cool, a big trench coat, with goggles, a blue tank top – At least now it looked cool because I was miles more muscular – And some of my brother’s – who was 2 years older than me and now the same size as me – trousers. I had always liked them. They were white with a blue fiery design at the bottom. I was ready. The next morning I woke up at 6a.m to head to the airport, my mam said goodbye kissing my on the cheek which I hated… But I was going for the week... So it didn’t bother me... That much.
I arrived at Newcastle at 8 and was rearing for it to be Monday so I could play against these girls…. Until then I was to take a look around the school and the area and whatever else… The day from then was ok, unpacking in our hotel and walking around the area…. Sunday came, and I forgot about everything in the world as it was 11 o’clock and I was still in bed, the first lie I had in what seemed to be years. The rest of the day I basically just listened to music – Fall out Boy of course – and practiced the song we were going to perform the following day. Conor, Dean and I thought we were great and decided to treat ourselves with a break from this American place called “Starbucks” in the shopping centre. We ‘chatted’ to some of the people there as we saw them gawking at us because we looked the same as them…Except less ermm…Chavish I believe they call it. But we were only there for a week so we didn’t really care what we said to them, if they wanted to make something of it I had a secret up my sleeve…

We went to see Spider Man 3 at 9 and then headed for the hotel to go to sleep. We mainly talked and stayed up till about 3 o clock. But no worries. We had another lie in. I couldn’t stop thinking about my new found ability, I just kept thinking what else I could do. In comics the heroes get to fight big monsters. But as far as I was concerned, we lived in a different world. No monsters. No villains who wanted world domination. But the thought of something like that happening stayed in my mind.

It was 7 a.m and I decided to go down to the shops, Conor and Dean were still asleep. When I reached the newsagents I saw the headlines of a newspaper “Liberty Girl is on Fire!” I grabbed the newspaper out of its holder, and read the article… “Liberty Girl, our new hero, has been awarded key to the city…” The newsagent looked out at me and shouted “This isn’t a library, buy it or leave!” I put down the newspaper and walked on, still thinking of the newspaper. The girl in the picture looked about 18, but there was something different about her… Like she was the same age as me… It was 8 o clock and I remembered about the guys, and decided I should head back. I saw a nearby alley, I thinking of taking a shortcut back to the hotel, but I heard shouts coming from behind dumpster. I rushed in. I saw a young girl being robbed; I had no time to put on the costume. I just yanked out my mask and ran in. I was frightened. I had never tried to use my powers on someone before. I threw my hands out and as my hands glowed with a blue aura, the mugger was on the ground, I could see him squirm and he couldn’t get up as the force of gravity was too heavy crushing him to the dank floor. I was about to leave, but the lady was still in shock, I helped her walk out to the alley, and she thanked me, it felt great to be thanked for something like this. I said “No Problem” and leapt away back into the sky. The wind was brushing off my fingers and it felt great. As I landed, I remembered I needed to get back to the hotel, and leapt off again.

I met them in the lobby. They were waiting for me. “Michael, where you been, we were supposed to go to the school to set up.” Conor said as I stepped through the door. “Sorry, I woke up early and went out for a walk.” I said looking down at my feet, hoping they wouldn’t notice the dirty water I got from the alley way. We grabbed our things and headed for the school. We walked by a field. I was busy looking ahead while Conor noticed something in the field. “Hey! What’s that?! – Let’s go.” He shouted to us. We ran over as the crater became larger every step we took, there was sticks in the ground holding up tape saying “Caution. Do not enter” there was a few vans surrounding it and people in the hole studying the ground. The crater looked like the one I had found the rock in. I peered in my bag I had taken with me, and saw it under my drink. “It couldn’t be…Could it?” I thought to myself staring at the crater.

Dean shouted down to the people studying it, Conor had walloped Dean in the chest for doing it. He didn’t want to be seen by them, afraid they’d do something to us. They didn’t and Dean interjected “What happened here?” one of the men was wearing a white lab coat and had a magnifying glass in one hand, he shouted back up to Dean and told him that a meteor had possibly hit this site, but there was no evidence of the meteor there.

We were all a little freaked out, even me who had already witnessed something like this. We began heading up to the school again and talking about it all the way “I wonder if it was like aliens or something, that’d be cool.” Conor said gesturing with his hands. “Yeah…But. If it was aliens, we could all be screwed.” I said with a humorous tone. “Dean, what’s your take on this, you’ve been quiet since we left the site.” I said looking at Dean. “Hey, look, there’s the school.” Dean said avoiding the subject. We walked in and the girls were all staring at us as we walked in with our equipment strapped around us. On the way in I saw a girl run down the stairs, she had blonde highlights and was rather tall. “Wow. I love this school. Never seen so much girls in one place” Conor said laughing under his breath, Dean had smiled in agreement while I was still looking at the girl skipping down the stairs. We asked someone hanging around a locker where the hall was. He had directed us the way and asked if we were the Irish students. I answered “How’d ya know?” with a very Irish accent making a joke of the question, and we rushed off. “Nice one Mike, get everyone to hate us” Dean stated, holding in the laughter. We were at the hall, and were the first people from our school there. We set up on stage and went to our dressing rooms. I was wearing a Lord Recluse costume, Conor a Statesman costume, and Dean was wearing a rather tight Positron costume – We hooked him up with one of those voice boxes to make him sound robotic – We all laughed at each other because we all knew each of us looked like idiots. But we knew how to have fun.

It was about to begin. “Are you guys ready?” I said taking a breath “Yep!” they chorused. We walked onto the stage “Holy cow is this crowd big!” I shouted to them. I realised no one would know who I was and that got me calm. The lights flashed on, and the girls we’re standing next to me… I felt embarrassed, “What if I do something stupid and they laugh at me?” I took a breath and the music started playing. We were doing pretty well. I was walking around the stage and brushed up against the girl dressed as Ghost Widow. I could see some brown and blonde strands of hair, and remembered the girl I saw. I think I went a bit red. But no one could see under my helmet.

Suddenly, there was a loud crash and the roof came off “Holy s**t, what the hell is that?!” I shouted. I ran off stage into the back and ripped out of my costume and into my own. “I hope this goes well...” I heard a loud husky voice “Liberty Girl. Where is girl?!” My heart was thumping I jumped onto a box and lifted it off the ground with me on it....
