I'm actually curious to see what the PVP regulars say here. If it's a roll call of the "Flavor of the Month" doom builds, could be interesting.
And if we were placing bets, I'd say someone is going to tell you to be a stalker or a blaster. Because those are the most common things I see in the PVP zones running around in God Mode. (God Mode = killing me with one shot and before I realize I'm being attacked)

PS: If I were you and was new to the game, I'd start off by making a toon that seemed fun on PvE first...and then take it to the PVP zones. Since you're not interested in the "ultimate pvp toon", I'd say just have fun. A lot of the pvp builds I've seen people suggest are HYPER focused and don't have room for a lot of the fun powers...if that makes much sense.
My advice is to make a toon you enjoy learn the powers that you have and the job they do then take them into a Zone and see how each power affecks a foe and go from there.
Fotm is always a good build because its always a easy set to play. I personally dont play Fotm sets as they are so widely used. I always like to make something different work.
Whats always good in pvp is Rad. but then everyone has a rad!

I agree with knight stalker, pick up something that has good single target attacks and/or debuffs (unless you want to be support) and see what will happen. I'd recommend something bit durable at first though, so you would have some chance of observing whats going on without falling down immediately when a stalker looks at you in a bad way

Scrappers are pretty safe, balanced option. And theres usually more heroes than villains so its safer that way too.
Stalkers who get invisibility (pool power) to go along with hide can observe fights in sirens call from relatively safe vantage point. They are also pretty easy to pick off sheep that have strayed off from the pack..
Tankers (especially ice and fire in sirens) can be pretty safe too, but wont get many kills. Just concentrate on self-healing ability.
Masterminds are troublesome to manage but can become nearly unkillable at higher lvl, not necessarily a beginners option though.
Brutes might be nice too, /fire brute would be actually interesting in sirens.
EDIT: My post concerns only zone pvp. For arena, well, best to try arena with SOMETHING and then figure what kind of toon would you like for arena. Observing other peoples fights and asking them for opinions is also good.

This is pretty much what i would suggest as well. Welcome to CoX PvP btw hope you have fun and not let a few nubs every put you down from enjoying PvP zones/arena

I'm not looking for the ultimate toon here, just one I can get started in PvP with. I'll figure out the rest as I go on I hope
