John's thoughts...

the scene is a greasy spoon diner in a bad area of King's Row. Two dark brown bottles of cold beer sit on the table, yours full, his empty. A cigarette burns slowly down in his fingers.
"He" is John Nathaniel Saint. Dressed in simple grey slacks and brown rough leather jacket, his distinctive scarring is covered by a simple grey mouthscarf. His storm-cloud grey eyes stare pensively out through the filthy window. After a moment, he begins to speak in that low, soft voice.

"Hero 1.
"Probably the greatest hero ever to defend England. The new King Arthur.
"He was a friend of my father. And he was at my Christening, too. I still have the photos to prove it. The priest looked on the verge of heart failure. I was doing something suitably reverential, of course. Okay, I was [censored] in the holy water, but that's beside the point.
"Heh. Most people would be bloody ecstatic to have ANY hero as a family friend, let alone a piece of history like Leader 1. Not so much with me. I grew up with heroes. Most of the Dawn Patrol ended up baby-sitting me at one time or another, and it's hard to be reverential of someone who spent hours loosing to you on the SNES.
"Then again, none of them were as... well, as famous as Leader 1. In some respects, he was the one who showed me what it was like to bea hero. I spent my early life in my father's shadow, always under pressure to excel, and it was Hero 1 who provided the breaks for that. When the Red Saint was saying that I wasn't good enough, Hero 1 was saying I was great the way I was.
"Heheh. Perfect God father, really.
And now I'm the Red Saint.
"It's different to what I thought it'd be like. For one thing, there's no Dawn Patrol for me to learn from. No Leader 1 to tell me when I'm doing alright. But I had to learn from someone, so I left England for America, and London for Paragon. There were so many heroes there, I was sure to find SOMEONE who could teach me.
"I've been here about a month now. Officially, John Nathaniel Saint came over to open a bar and take a break from the English weather. And the Red Saint? Well, he wasn't the sort of hero who dealt much with the press.
"The bar's done surprisingly well. @Saints and Sinners@ pulls in WAY over average cash for most places like it, and it gives me a nice little place to come back to when the Red Saint isn't needed for a little while.
"Then there's the Fletched Alliance. A varied collection of emotional screw-ups trying to do the right thing. Mostly, we come across as a complete rabble, but sometimes... sometimes I swear I can see in us the same determination, the same... vitality that I used to see so long ago in the Dawn Patrol.
Sometimes.
"But all I really know, for better or for worse, is that I'm a hero in a broken city. I've still got a lot to prove, but prove it I will.
Because I am the Red Saint.
"Thanks for the drinks."

And then, with a last, long drag on his cigarette, he stands and walks out through the old wooden door of the diner.
