What is the Origin of this Place?

"In the Beginning, the Game it was epic fail. But we had the Costume Creator... then lo and behold, came the prophet Celtic Bolt, and he did hand out the freebies like locusts from the sky... okay maybe not locusts...

The art was a plenty, and then one day Jomaro Kindred cast a spell upon the land, and so did Brandon McKinney, and the collectors, those first proud few... Buckeyestar, Katfood, Bayani, and he who shall not be named *cough cough cough TA* were happy.

And unto the land came Douglas Shuler, and Sorah Suhung and David Nakayama sketches..."

The Collectors were few back then, not like now where every Dom, Rich and Mary thinks he has a collection after getting 3 pieces... It was all too much, until one day the all powerful Canadian, (that's right Canadian) Juggertha climbed the mountain of Woe, and wrote the How to Request Fan Art thread... (which newbs still don't read).

Ah many were the faces back then, many of who have left us to play the god forsaken ADD World of Warcraft... May Statesm... I mean Positron strike them down!"

------------------------------------------------

Okay but seriously, I would love to know the history, or the timeline of how it all began, can some of the old timers, chime in... this means you TA, Turboski, Syrusb, you 58 month badge whores... etc...

Any insight to how things were, compared to how things are now... what has changed? For good or bad... Inquiring minds want to know. Okay I want to know... but make it good, I needs a bedtime story.

Hmm. I don't remember when I started coming around here...

a 60 month badge hunter doesn't necessarily mean one of the art vet collectors, just means we've been here long enough to pay that long.. Although the vet vet art collectors prolly have that badge and then some.

And I dunno how this forum got kicked off; I was a very light browser when I started playing. I kinda gleaned some names of the big shots but didn't really know anything. I mostly did my own thing and it was over a year after I joined before I even signed up for a forum account. Even then it was still quite a while before I posted. (In a thread about markers.)

Except that a lot of the game's management's attitude toward fanart was very hush-hush. The artists didn't get much support or recognition... it was kinda like we were the black sheep of the game.

lol Bobby you cracked me up with that story!

OK I'm certainly not the official word on this but this is the origin of the fanart section as far as i know it:

When i first got here in 2004 there really wasn't anything going on beyond people showing off their outfits and discussing the costume creator. There was the odd posting by artists here and there but nothing like it is now. Over on the Virtue forum Xanatos was already at it with his collection in full swing. Sorah was cranking out some of her first art and thats really where the art was. I wanna say that Rowr had already got her start on her collection over on Virtue as well.

At that point i had started my own account and was still the great passerby and lurker to this section when i noticed a thread called my CoH cards for the Irregulars SG. By the time i noticed the thread, it was already pages in. Spinomania, Ironic, Thornster and a host of others had already requested and got some of the coolest cards i had ever seen and I was hooked. So on January 22 of 2005 i requested a card for TA and the man delivered this, my very first piece of art. From there i was totally hooked. I started commissioning artists right away including this one from MMOart and the rest is history.

It felt like it was a snowball effect after that. People kept popping in with their commissioned art and posting it up and collections started. Rowr started posting her stuff over here too. Of course Katfood was going strong around that time as well. Artists like Graver, Veikara, Scarfgirl, Jomaro, Doug, Brandon, Sorah and a host of others were fully emerged and then came Juggertha into the fold. Posting up some artwork he had done and I suggested that he should be charging for it. He wasn't so sure at the time but i offered to be his test subject and became his first commissioner. The rest is history.

So i don't claim that i was the first but i do know that once i started going crazy, everyone else joined in and went crazy with me

All hail the great Celtic Bolt though. I do believe he was the start of the mania here on the boards. Speaking of which, i should bump that thread in case it matters....

In the beginning I avoided this forum completely until Quake's little megaman minis actually tricked me to enter this forum and I've been trapped here ever since.

No, just a combination of old age and Alzheimers setting in.

60 months badge, but only maybe 12 months spent here. Might have put up a screen shot that won me a contest in my SG, but that would have been it.

now the addiction has fully set in.

I....totally stumbled into the Art forum after Bay had Kai play cameo in an image. I had art before then, CB did my very first piece, of Wyld Fyre, and I had been getting stuff from dA artists, but didn't actually realize there was a forum on the boards for that sort of thing til oh, well into year 3 at least, all my stuff was off in Virtue or on dA only

I remember the early days, when there were monsters on the corner of every map, and men were men and women were women. Now, you got catgirls all over the place and crazy dragon ladies and sometimes dudes pay me money to draw them naked.

I don't recall when I started hanging with the 'art crowd'.

I do know my first commish was from Poison (shame on you guys for not mentioning him!) and then after that they started rolling in. Of course, many were deemed *cough* too hot for the official forums *cough* so now I just do a two-click link to DA and leave it at that....

OH! And Zenvious. Must mention Zenvious and his BANNERS. Awesome stuff.

I did what I always do - wandered in like a stray fox, and stuck around/lurked for a while.

...Still doin' it. Except I try to be slightly more helpful and informative these days (though whether or not I succede is certainly a matter for debate). :3
