MA/SD Questions
wow, those 2 build's are very simular. You could prolly use the same sets/slotting.
What power pools do you prefer? I'll assume Leaping, Speed, Fighting, and Fitness, but you never know with theme toons
I suppose Leaping is skippable..its nice to at least have Combat Jumping tho
is your Sheild/SS lvl 50 and IO'd? and do you have a Mid's build of that?
perma jump is ---> /up 1
SS won't cut it for Cap? At least SS can Hurl a flat object; you could do worse than pretend he's hurling the shield.

My SD/SS Man 0'War is level 34 and he is still using SOs.
His focus has been tanking so his primary has been slotted at the expense of his secondary. He's good at staying alive (with inspirations) and grabbing and keeping aggro, but in terms of actually stomping on folks, he is a little less than awesome right now. But since he teams I feel his job is to keep the squishies alive and they can destroy the mobs, so he doesn't have to be amazing at damage. He will get better at damage with some slot love as he gets older and at 38 I'm pretty sure he will hit like a mobile Howitzer, but in terms of the feel of SS, it feels like a very heavy hitting not subtle set. I consider Cap to hit plenty hard but with more grace and poise, plus having the time to explain about leverage in between hits! So thats whats leading me to MA/SD.
Feel The Burn
Well sailboat, to be honest, Unarmed combat, the scrapper set that still doesn't exist would suit Cap the best.
Considering the animations from energy melee, Super Strength and MA could be used it would just be a matter of... ok its probably wicked complicated, but at least it wouldnt require new power animations!
The thing is he's going to solo mostly with the odd team here and there, which basically means a scrapper. For scrappers a team = fillers so they get even larger mobs to mob dive into! I have soloed a few tanks to their mid 40s and its hard damn work (at least for me) the exception was my Fire/Fire, but I got him to 38 when Burn still reigned supreme.
Another reason I'm thinking MA/SD is that when he gets to his 50s Id like to try my hand at AV soloing which is easier for scrappers. Notwithstanding one of Nihili's post's in which Nihili says that her SD/Dark tank makes her cry because he's better and more surviveable than her scrapper (thus far).

Forgot to answer Hindenburg's other questions,
Pools I'm thinking about are Fitness, leaping, fighting and perhaps leadership,
If hasten didnt make your hands go on bubbly fire I would go with that.
Im pretty sure there was a post in one of Nihilis DB/Inv against stuff that said you could disable the graphic effecty on hasten, if so, then speed is a candidate.

kewl, well, i did this build before your last post.
you think Laser Eyes would break the theme? I wonder how well Air Superiority would work (looks cool)
regarding this build, it needs work (not happy with it) and i've only played a Shielder up to 39

Thanks Hindenburg,
I wont be able to see the build till I get home.
LBE could be a set mule, but it definately wont get used.
If Cap doesn't get em, neither does Shield 0f Liberty!
Feel The Burn
it'd be cool if you had a attack with your hands..if i recall Air Superiority, Boxing, and Brawl all have there animations with the shield...Maybe slot one of those attacks with 3 damage procs and a few Nuc's?
dang, this makes me want to finish off my shield tank :P
perma jump is ---> /up 1
Waitaminute!
You can slot more than one proc in a power?
I had tried making a Cap like char before shields came out, MA/SR,
I took boxing instead of thunder kick and air sup so I would have hand to hand attacks, hassle with boxing at least for me, is that it if you pair it with thunder kick it looks great, then go to storm kick and axe , but if you box then storm, theres a character reposition that looks a littkle bit odd.
So I have 2 powers that do the lowest damage possible instead of one low damage with progressively more damage.
So in the end I have decided that while I would LOVE to have 50% punching attacks,50% kicks, I would be gimping the heck ouit of the character to do so.
But perhaps with multi procs in punch.....

Right now my MA/SD is L38 and kicks much butt. I don't have a guide or anything, but I can offer some random advice, in no particular order:
- End use is pretty heavy. If you can afford a Miracle Unique it'll help A LOT
- Also, get a Steadfast +Def as soon as you can
- Use IO sets to soft-cap Melee Defense first, then Ranged and AoE
- 6-slot Gaussian's in Focused Chi. It gives you + to all 3 positions, end, damage, and health.
- Dragon's Tail and Air Sup are great mitigation, as well as decent damage especially with baddies in melee range for Against All Odds and after Focus Chi
- Shield Charge is... it's so... beautiful...
- Boxing let's you 6 slot Razzle Dazzle for +Melee and +AoE defense
- I've decided to go without Heal Self and rely on Regen and Inspirations to heal since the build id so tight. Hasn't been too bad.
Hmmm... that's all I got for now. Enjoy
End game DPS chain is Storm Kick -> Crane Kick -> Storm Kick -> Crippling Axe Kick.
Mid level chain is more of an it depends. I think a very effective one would be Storm Kick -> Air Superiority -> Crane Kick -> Storm Kick -> Air Superiority -> Crippling Axe Kick. Lots of knock down and knock back to boost your survivability, only 69% recharge required in Storm Kick (frankenslot it), and pretty decent DPS. But unless you're going into the flight pool anyway, I wouldn't want to burn a pool just for an attack.
Boxing works, and you'll probably be taking it anyway to get into Tough and Weave. But that bumps up the recharge to 90%. That's tougher to frankenslot for, so you're probably looking at Hasten, and small gaps when Hasten is down. Or just small gaps and skipping Hasten. You might not have the endurance for a faster chain anyway.
Thunder Kick is even better DPS, but it burns an extra power choice, and the recharge requirement climbs to 107%, so you're looking at bigger gaps while Hasten is down, which would probably cancel out the DPS benefit anyway. Also, all kicks, and it sounds like you want some punches.
And all of those have Crane Kick, which some people don't like because of the knockback, and Crippling Axe Kick, which some people don't like because of the animation.

Wouldn't you want to start with Crippling Axe Kick, since it has the highest damage? And if it crits, the critter would be defeated quicker?
Wow,
How the heck do you keep track of all that stuff Werner?
At the moment I'm torn between trying to get some punches (air Sup, and boxing) into the mix for a more Cap feel or going with MA as the gods of CoH intended.
Thunderkick is actually one of my favourite attacks in look and feel, I just love that Kapow sound, and its quick and looks like it hurts. I actuially like the look more than Storm kick, but Storm is the best attack in MA so its staying.
Thunder does more damage than boxing and does accept the same sets as boxing (I remember Power muled boxing on his DM/SD build) so I'm leaning towards Thunder.
Air Superiority= Life so I will want that at least for a while since Ive seen what it can do in the hands of someone who knows how to use it well. I was stunned at what it can do to keep you up. You know that CoT mission that you get in the hollows? That big long bear of a mission with the crystal jails that anyone with any sense would avoid like the plague?
Well for the team I was on it was wipe city left and right but there was a DM/WP with air sup that just kept on chugging and it was because everytime Air Sup was up, something got knocked on its a$$. It was the difference between having to beat his way out of a crystal jail and getting to continue beating on bad guys! Needless to say he was our hero.
So lets see I guess at low levels the attacks will be thunder, storm and air sup?
Do you think that will be enough to be able to solo Posi TF? Or will I need another attack?

Storm Kick is your highest DPS attack by far, only does about 10% less damage than Crippling Axe Kick, and will hit the enemy almost a second sooner. And Crippling Axe Kick isn't your highest damage attack; Crane Kick is. Basically, I was trying to front load the DPS.
But I don't think it would make any real difference if you lead with Crippling Axe Kick. The difference of front loading the DPS is pretty trivial given the short duration of the chain compared to the time it will take to work your way through a crowd or take down a big boss. So either way would be fine.

Giant spreadsheet with many different chains for many different primaries.

I'm not a lowbie chain expert, but that would seem logical. You have the two fastest recharging kicks, plus Air Superiority, which also recharges quickly. It looks like you'd have big gaps, but pre-Stamina, that's not necessarily a bad thing. It may also not be that simple to fix, as adding more attacks that you can't slot out isn't necessarily going to improve the situation. Anyway, I just play my lowbies by feel most of the time.

Dunno. Haven't even done Posi.

Hi all,
I have a burning desire to create a natural origin, "Me, My Shield and My Skills against all of you!" Character.
I have a Shield/SS and while he is great at fulfilling his concept, SS is not going to cut it for my Cap clone.
So its looking like MA/Shield.
I want to basically solo all of the content of the game including TFs. I'll be looking for 5th Column MA mishes but will be doing those with XP off.
Also He needs to be awesome!
My plan is to IO him early to help solo the TFs and respec in stages so his early life build will be different from what he looks like in the end game.
So the question is can anyone with MA or even better MA/SD experience and or IO char building
experience help me out with some builds?
Since the char will be near and dear to my heart and in direct competition to my Fire/SR for coolness, your help will be greatly appreciated.
If any of the big guns weigh in, a word on attack chains at various stages of his career will be greatly appreciated.
I will be using the store bought jet pack for a travel power for the duration of his career.
