In a modern setting game, it may not be evident when I am not unless I make an explicit reference to the game mechanic, but just as I dislike emoticons (weak substitute for clarity in writing) so do I dislike (()) and similar notions.

But if you RPed a character like Red Mage then you could talk about the game mechanics and still be in character.
There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"
