I need suggestions for a character to take to 50.

A couple of mine are:

Fire/MM/elec blaster. This character is a huge AoE powerhouse and loads of fun to play on big teams.

Earth/Kin/Earth Controller. Wads and Wads of hard and soft controls, and kinetics is a hugely fun powerset, with lots of wonderful self and team buffs.

Fire/SR scrapper. It's a late bloomer, but once it does, look out. A great solo character.

I think a Blaster or Brute/Scrapper is pretty fast to 50. When you know what you are doing they all seem pretty fast with Tankers and Defenders feeling the slowest when soloing. My first 50 way back in Issue 1 was a Ice/Em blaster followed by a SS/INV tank, I learned quite a bit about the game by switching between the extremes of the two so that's my recommendation.
