Starting DB/SR AV soloist

Folks:

I’m just starting the process of turning my lvl 50 DB/SR scrapper, Ms Pris, into a AV soloist. Since I’m a pointy-headed academic, I’ve read as much as I could from this forum and other sources. As a first step (did I mention that my wife calls me “methodical”?), I’ve put together what I think is the best list of powers for my planned build. I’d greatly appreciate any thoughts/feedback.

Primary/Attack Chain (5)
Blinding Feint
Ablating Strike
Vengeful Slice
Sweeping Strike
Power Slice

This seems to be pretty standard unless one can get really crazy recharge bonuses.

Secondary (8)
all but Elude

Elude should be unnecessary once my defense is soft-capped.

Fitness (3)
Swift
Health
Stamina

A no-brainer.

Medicine (2)

Aid Other
Aid Self

One thing missing from my current build, and I gather the ability to self-heal is a must-have for AV fighting.

Fighting (3)

Kick
Tough
Weave

Also missing from my current build, which I regret as I’m still short of the soft-cap even with a reasonable selection of IOs.

Speed (1)

Hasten

Will have a couple/three lvl 50 recharges so that its available as often as possible.

Leaping (1)

Combat Jump

Just a bit more defense, though perhaps this is overkill.

Leadership (1)

Assault

Gets me more damage which seems to be my biggest weakness.

This list means no Focused Accuracy or Conserve Power as I’m hoping to have IOs push up accuracy and recovery. None of the other Epic Powers seem all that useful for AV fighting (or much of anything else). There’s no travel power, but that’s why there’s a Jetpack store in the Shadow Shards.

Next stop, figuring out slots per power and IOs that are useful and affordable. I also need to do better at the market. I’ve been way too optimistic about what folks will pay for my stuff.

That has you choosing six power pools out of four power pool choices...

I'm afraid it doesn't work.

Ah, I'm only allowed four power pools! I learn something new every day.

I guess that means Combat Jumping and Assault go, and I replace them with Conserve Power and Focused Accuracy.

Pointed headed academic or not, I would recommend you go back & take a closer look at the forums. There are multiple threads both in the Scrapper & Player Guide forums on how to build a /SR Scrapper that has defense soft-capped.

The short version:
1) Take all your secondaries.
2) Take Leaping (Combat Jumping / Superjump)
3) Take Fighting (kick/toughness/weave)
4) Stick a lvl 40 or higher IO in everything that adds defense.
5) Stick a "Steadfast Protection: Resistance/Defense" in one of the slots you have for Toughness.

For DB, you want to pay close attention to the guides to DB. I'm no DB expert, but based on what I know about its similarity to Claws, you want to look at using the lower level, fast recharging attacks & spamming your version of Follow-Up as much as possible. Unlike Claws, however, you have to give some thought to which combinations you plan to make use of.

If you're just starting out with your first level 50, you are probably looking hard at the inventions with your nose pressed up against the glass, wishing you had an extra 2 billion influence laying around. There are several very good invention builds out there.

You don't have to spend alot of money to soft-cap your defense, but you could spent billions trying to dial in all the other stats of your Scrapper.

That should help get you started. But the important thing to remember is that the type of character you're out to make will always be an unfinished masterpiece. No matter how long or how much you spend on her, you will always have to make a compromise that will lead you to second-guessing your choices.

Some players respec their Scrappers a dozen times, trying to dial into the perfect balance of abilities & enhancements that play best to their style.

I have softcapped sr 48% melee and aoe and 50% ranged something close to that but yep softcapped without tough and weave. And was not very expensive to do

My SR is soft capped for a very reasonable price and I exclude Tough/Weave from my build, but I would not make a great AV soloist. Tough and Weave probably offer the most slotting choices for attacks, as you will not have to use a lot of sets to get to the soft cap.

From what I gather Aid Self is handy for soloing AVs but not required, give a bit of wiggle room if you will. And Hasten would depend on the ideal DB attack chain, which I'm not very familiar with. If you can use combos and have a good attack chain without Hasten, it would be convenient to save a power pool.

I wouldn't bother slotting and using Power Slice on an AV build. You don't need really crazy recharge to run Blinding Feint -> Attack Vitals. You need +128% recharge in Blinding Feint, +109% recharge in Sweeping Strike, and +96% recharge in Vengeful Slice. That should be easily in reach on a good set IO build. If budget for recharge is a problem though, then yeah, you might get stuck running Power Slice while Hasten is down.

Unless he's planning on a multi-billion influence mega build with “really crazy recharge bonuses”, Blinding Feint -> Attack Vitals is the way to go. The higher DPS chains happen at truly insane levels of recharge.

[/ QUOTE ]
No, but they're a very good idea. Toughness helps reduce the severe spikes of damage that you take from AVs. And Weave is a nice big push towards the soft cap.

Technically correct. You can do a soft-capped build using just SOs. But that would be a really bad idea for an AV soloing build. Slot a Steadfast Protection.

While you can solo a few AVs without Aid Self on an otherwise extremely solid build, you can probably solo several times as many with Aid Self. I'd keep it.

I'd say that Hasten is useful but optional. I'd be shooting for the Blinding Feint -> Attack Vitals chain outside of Hasten, at which point Hasten is mostly speeding up Aid Self. I'm sure that would make the difference on a few AVs, but it might be more convenient to grab Combat Jumping, or Maneuvers, or Tactics with a Gaussian set, or whatever. The point is that there are a lot of powers that are good at that point.
