SR Defense Questions

Hi, I'm pretty new to the game but have read many forum posts, and have even gotten a character to 50. One of my first characters is a MA/SR. I have problems with the MA portion, but I'll leave that for another post.

My questions are in regards to defensive slotting. I have taken the following defensive toggles:
Focused Fighting - DEF / DEF / (DEF/END) / END
Focused Senses - DEF / DEF / (DEF/END) / END
Evasion - DEF / DEF / (DEF/END) / END
Combat Jumping - DEF / DEF
Tough - ( Steadfast Protection +3% def )
Weave - DEF / DEF / (DEF/END) / END

I also have the following passive defenses:
Agile - DEF / DEF / DEF
Dodge - DEF / DEF / DEF
Lucky - DEF / DEF / DEF / (Kismet Acc)

Focus Chi / Build Up
Gaussian Synch - full set (+2.5% melee, ranged, AoE)

I have a couple special procs in there (+3% def, Kismet Acc, and a few DEF/END set IOs) From what I can see on Hero Designer this defense seems solid. My questions are:
1) Is this defense sufficient or should I use additional sets for defense?
2) If I was to find an LotG recharge proc, how could i fit this into my defensive plan and not loose out on defense?
3) Can any of these powers be effectively skipped? (i.e Agile in favour of a *few* Mako's sets?)

Thanks!
PS: I would have made up in Hero Designer, but I am at work, sorry.

I skipped nothing for my /SR. Each toggle and passive grants def debuff resistance. If anything is 'skip-able' it is Quickness, as it grants no Def. It's still handy, but up to you.

I actually didn't have Weave for a long time, but I very much has a similar build to yours.

Bases on what I see you aren't using IO sets. Do so. They grant greater enhancement than SO's/HO's alone. (If you are using IO sets--Good!)

I have full sets of Red fortune in Focused Fighting, Focused Senses and Evasion. It's a nice set +2% dam, +5% recharge, +2.5 Ranged Def--each.

For Agile, Dodge and Lucky, I have slotted with Gift of the Ancients (Def & Def/Run Speed). Nice for the recovery bonuses, but mostly done because I could not afford the the LotG. (I do also have Kismet in Agile) These are a good home for LotG if you can get it.

Combat Jumping give so little defense, I slot it not for Def, but Blessing of the Zephyr. The +3.13% to Ranged and AoE is much nicer than what you'd get for enhancing the base 1.88% def. (plus being able to bounce around in a fight is just fun)

Tough, I actually 6 slotted. (Res/Def unique and 5 parts Aegis) Aegis Unique is nice for the reduction to Fear and Confuse durations that SR lacks, and 5 parts Aegis grants almost 5% AoE def.

I place greater enhancement in Melee Def, as that set bonus doesn't appear to often. (although a full set of Obliteration in Dragon's Tail will net you another +3.75%)
Aside from Focused Fighting/Senses and Evasion--I do not max out def enh. I often settle for grabbing many def powers and slot for set bonuses. The smaller the base defense the less I need to enhance.

Quickness also grants Slow Resistance, so it is really not a Skip-able power.

The only power in /SR that is skip-able is Elude.

Replaced elude with conserve power in my latest build. VERY happy with that decision.

Skipping the passives is a very bad idea due to the scaling damage resistance they provide.

Be well, people of CoH.

Well, I did say it's still a handy power. I know some folks skip it anyway. As for Elude, yeah you can skip it, but it's good to have in a pinch. I use it more often for the boost to recovery.

I agree with everyone on this. Elude is skippable. It's also probably the only SR power you want to skip. Quickness is necessary (at least in my experience) to increase your recharge rate. Since you'll inevitably need to skip a few powers from your primary set, you'll likely want that extra recharge to ensure that an attack is always up and ready.

I have my own questions with regard to SR builds that can reach the defense softcap. I have a DB/SR build (which everyone says is tight in terms of power selection--but I found I can live with five of the DB hits without problem). But I'll experiment a bit and see if I can get anywhere on my own before asking.

But, properly slotted, I found I can herd like a tank at levels past 40 with SR. With a an Empath's Fortitude or another defense buff on me, I'm in incredible shape and rarely get hit by equal-level critters. But to do this I need every power (except Elude) and all toggles on. The Fighting pool's Tough also helps a bunch.

Current Triumph Server Fifties:
Jim Pinrail (energy/kin defender), James van der Helm (ill/ff controller), Jim Jab (db/sr scrapper), Golden Chalice (emp/rad defender), Exclamation (dm/sd scrapper), Jim-El (elm/sd scrapper), Riparian (spines/wp scrapper), Psychiatric Solution (mind/psi dominator), Tricky Pick (night widow), Hypohipster (km/wp scrapper)

[/ QUOTE ]Elude seems skippable, but it's also someplace else to slot Zephyr if you want to soft-cap, and with Quickness, Swift, and Combat Jumping, you really don't need an actual travel power.

Skip elude, take other 8, softcap. Generically speaking it's pretty easy.

My Fire/SR is very cheaply built. I put only 2 slots in each passive (the third slot is _not_ worth the return unless you're after a set bonus) and 5 in the three shields (Red Fortune for +15% recharge) with 6 in buildup (Gaussian), 1 in tough (3%), 3 in weave weave (3 Hami-O's) and lots of attacks. Aid Other & Aid Self also got 5 slots of doctored wounds.

I can't remember but I only needed like 2% total defense from set bonuses and got those pretty easily. I think boxing had a stun set in it for a defense bonus.

Well if you're going for 45%+ def then you don't need lotg because you really don't need elude. The quickness and 5 redfortune sets will give you more than enough global recharge.

[/ QUOTE ]Ah, but if you take Elude, slot 3x Zephyr in it, you don't need to take Weave for it, and you still have Elude for when the defense debuffs do stack up (I'm looking at you, Anti-Matter). The 3% melee defense is found through slightly different setups. And the third in each passive is worth the return if you're after high defense debuff resistance, as theirs is enhanceable.

Example of soft-cap build that gets there at 41, without weave:
