Is there ANY way to fail a non-combat escort?

Some escorts can take damage without being able to attack. This is the Pacifist setting IIRC. Apart from that, no. They'll follow you everywhere and enemies will ignore them.

I don't know what happens if an escort gets into a spot like an Oranbega pond where it can't get out. I suspect at that point you just have to abandon the arc.

Easy way to find out is to copy the text, then clear the space. If no error shows up, it's not able to be failed so the text is unnecessary.

No, it is technically failable. As soon as you add an escort it is technically failable. I'm pretty sure non-combat guys can't be attacked. Whenever I've seen them used as enemies in other people's missions, they have the orange hitbox but you get "Invalid Target" when trying to attack them, and they don't take damage from PBAoEs either. I just want to make sure the escorts work the same way, because if my escort is actually failable, you know the second I remove the text someone will somehow manage to get him killed.

I'd just put in a slight variant of the succeed text, reflecting that the escort didn't make it to the door on their own.... but then something else happened to 'rescue' them after all.

Ahhh...now I see what you mean. If they are listed as 'non-combat' I don't think they can take any damage, so getting them killed is probably impossible. They do have to be taken to the target point, though. I can't think of any possible way it could be failed unless you couldn't find them. I can't remember if there is an option to choose whether or not an escort is 'optional', but I don't think there is. I suppose if you're forced to enter text, 'just in case', you could make it a simple thing like, "Oops!" or "Fail!" just to CYA for that happening. It certainly wouldn't take up a lot of space. LOL

I think Eva just wants to remove the text entirely to save space (well, not entirely, but replace it with just one letter, e.g. "X").

Was colored black by those killing machines

The best you can do is set it up for the escort to spawn up front. As long as it's an indoor map it should work. If it's an outdoor map, you have no control over the spawn point.

I had one of these in a mission.

The character was not "attackable", but the mission would not complete because the character was following the player to the door. It was an outdoor forest map and even when we dragged the character through the zoning out area the character couldn't find the door and, therefore the mission would not completed.

But the mission did not fail.
