Imagination

Just some randomness on the topic.

In my 5 years of playing this game and my first MMO I have been imersed in my own imagination. It's really what turned me on the the game in the first place. I remember being a kid dreaming of getting super powers, being able to fly, take out super villains, etc etc. So my brother introduces me to this new super hero themed RPG MMO and i got to admit i was interested. Though the adult in me belittled him and called him a "geek" or "nerd" as i watched him roll up his toon in Beta. I've always been a gamer though so it was very much the pot and the kettle story. But then he offered to let me roll up a character. I started playing with the creator and 3 hours later i came up with my main character Thor's Assassin. My imagination from childhood was sparked and I was hooked. Damn you devs!! *lazily shakes fist*

Throughout that next 6 months i think i doubled my time in the game to my brothers (I wouldn't let him play lol). It was during that time that i realized the game had another draw, the community of players themselves. I quickly made friends and started playing nightly realizing i finally needed to get my own account....

So i did. Over the 5 years i have been engulfed in making characters and dreaming up their powers, background stories and appearance in my nightime dreams. My imagination was so amped that it spilt into the art arena. I have since emassed a collection of art that totals up somewhere around 500 pieces. Most of which was commissioned with my own money. Counting up to literally thousands and thousands of dollars of my hard earned money dedicated to my characters i imagined and created through this great game.

Also through the 5 years i have been through all the changes. Through the nerf bats and the Jack Emmert era to which my character felt less like a level 50 super hero and more like a rag doll. Through ED where my character felt even less like a hero. Through the late addition of Pvp where i couldn't get out of the hospital from dying so much. Through the loss of great community leaders like CuppaJo,Lighthouse and most recently Ex Libris. Through the takeover of NCSoft NorCal which has taken the game to new heights in my opinion. To the latest addition of Mission Architect where that child imagination got sparked again. I just need to actually publish a couple more arcs lol.

With the recent happening in the game it's my sincerest hope that the developers of this great game have not suffered a lack of imagination in the way they are dealing with these exploits. I've trusted the judgement of the devs through 5 years of bliss. Please don't let me down in this crucial decision.

For my part i plan to be here until they close the servers. I have too much invested into the game to not wait out the storm. Literally thousands of friends, money, time in hours (5340 hours on my main), personal creativity and even the time on the boards here (you can probably tell that by my post count ). I truly hope this isn't the straw that broke the camels back. I am very much looking forward to the addition of Rogue and the upcoming booster packs (i have purchased all of them) and HeroCon to which i'll be attending my 3rd year hopefully.

It's my greatest wish that i'll be typing to you in these forums 5 years from now though it's not looking to hot right now. To the devs and to my community of friends here on the boards and in the game i wanna let you guys know that the last five years have been awesome and i thank you. You have managed to get me through a fight with cancer and introduced me to the love of my life who i moved across the country to be with.

All my Best to the game, it's inhabitants, it's creators and it's longivity.

Excellent post Thor.

Thanks for the kind wishes; I am also in the long haul though I do reserve the right to complain about power changes/PvP/ anything that grinds my gears.

Cheers!

Hear, hear!!! Very well said TA!

Devs, please do not the nay sayers, doom givers and malcontents derail what many, many of your player base think is the right direction to go.

Thanks TA for voicing the feelings of many of us un-heard majority.

Yeah, the current situation is a sticky one for everyone involved, but I still have faith in the game, and its developers. I like to log in and play a superhero/villain of my own design with some of the friends I've picked up along the line. It's a nice, casually paced MMO that if I miss logging in for a week, I've not lost much, but where I can still go on a 10 hour playing binge if I feel like it.

So as long as this doesn't change, I'm staying. I'm not promising any more than that, but so far it seems to have worked out fine.

Thanks guys.

Just something i felt had to be said from me. I really don't know what to make of this all yet. I wanna hear the other side of the story first. Like from the Devs perspective.

Btw...

Anyone read that article on wired.com?

I'm really afraid for the future of the game. I don't think the devs can rebuild all the goodwill they've lost recently, survive the newshinyness of their coming competition, weather the current storm of bad publicity, or bring in the kind of subscription numbers I suspect NCSoft expects from the upcoming expansion. It's simply too much at once. I think the fact that most of our longtime community supporters are losing hope for the future is a bad sign.

But I just wanted to add that I love this community and that I'm here for the long haul as well. Thank you, TA; your post does my heart good.

Yeah, perish the thought they should stop the huge exploit. I really think I should be able to get from 1 to 50 in 5 minutes. And by the way, please note the sarcasm.

What is all this talk of doom from the older players? I cant seem to find what everyone is referencing. Links would be muchly appreciated.

Same here.

And btw, I've been in this game since the beginning, and I don't care what everyone else says, I think the game still rocks, and everything is hunky-dory!

Cheer up guys. Gosh.

This thread from this point, to until it was locked pretty much sums up what's been going on. Weed through the posts though, there are some long time, respectable people that have posted about it (and some of those respectable players were mod smacked).

There's always doom. It's the way of the forums, unfortunately.

Luckily, the doomsayers are always wrong. The game gets better every issue.

. . . they should stop the huge exploit.

Quoted for massive truth! I'm all in favor of stopping exploits. I wish that every time it happened people didn't fly off the handle, though, but that's hardly the devs' fault. By the way, the fact that Rikti Communication Officers were responsible (well, involved, anyway ) in the late powerleveling mess has caused me to develop an unreasoing hatred of them wherever I see them. My team was looking at me funny as I was typing "Die, PL'ing scum!" as I pile-drivered the Communication Officers with Incadescent Strike.

Also, I can't speak for anyone else, but I know the main reason I post dooooom-y posts is so someone can tell me I'm being an idiot.

See? Like that. It's tough to get perspective on this stuff just by reading the fora.

Thanks again to Thor's Assassin for this thread.

Time for someone to trot out the Invader Zim "Doom song" on YouTube...

The recent events are but a minor roadbump, ED was a "worse" than this will be, and how many years ago now was that?

Posted

Ed WAS worse than this, but ED happened at a diffenrt time. Or rather, a differnt marcketplace. If youw anted a superhero game, this was the only one in town. Don't like it? Too bad, you're stuck here. This problem, althogh much smaller by comparison comes just as Champions Online is being set to release, and for the firs timte in 5 years, if you don't like how City fo Heroes is going you will be able to take your money somewhere else. It is also coming as they are gearing up to release a new expansion, which will mean that people ahve an even ahrder choice to amke since sticking with CoH will mean paying for a new box as like if they were switching to CO.

Also, the Architect system is a revolution in game design - somethign compeltly new that no one has ever even attempted to implement before. If it works out then thats all good. But it looks real bad on the development team if they devote massive resources to creating this revolutionary new storytelling oppertunity, and its chief use is as an exploit which precipitates a crisas (percieved or otherwise) in the community.

Thats not necesarilly to say that this kurflufel will deal a death-blow to the game, but it is to say that the City of Heroes franchise is in a MUCH weaker position to be pissing people off and looking bad.

I think these changes are being made specifically BECAUSE of CO... I think they want to get all their papers in order so to speak, to be able to show off a professional, enjoyable fun game when going toe-to-toe with CO. Having people farming and power-leveling in the very first zone someone logs into will not help that.

Likewise, massive changes and disgruntled players won't be good either, which is why they are doing this before CO comes out.

I feel that every choice the Devs make is to secure the future of CoX... I just feel for the poor badgers this time around

They could ahve shuit down the percieved exploit without going back and trying to hit eveyrone with the banstick who may ever have done ti. Solving the problem is just commons ense, and you're right, its essential precisly because of the newly competative marketplace. The latter, although it may appeal to our more vindictive natures, seems to ahve caused more problems than it would ahve solved.

Ditto. In spite of my frustration at people here, it's still a really cool game after five years. In spite of disagreeing sometimes with the developers, I think they do a great job. For the 1% of the time I'm unhappy in the game, there's 99% of happiness, and that's a much better rate of return than most pasttimes.

Here's to the years to come!

It could be that players that did not pl or use any exploit have gotten 72hr bans and toons deleted. Nah, couldnt be that. Using the level pact system is not an exploit, please let CS know that

I'm officially calling BS on that claim.

Seriously seconded like the fist of the North Star.

Farming is something you have to actively do, it's not a state of 'oops, that was a farm? I didn't know that filling my mish with one specific mob known to be weak and heavy-XP-bearing or my custom-built weaklings and then running it over and over again with 8 man teams could qualify me as a farmer!'

Even if you somehow got banned for something you didn't do, sending a polite 'that wasn't me' email' isn't going to kill anyone; if you didn't do it, there's no evidence.

If people heeded the warnings and played as directed, then no one would be pissed off. The only people who are pissed off have to blame are themselves. It was stated aggregiously abusing the system could result in account actions being taken. They failed to heed the warnings, as such they got whatever action was taken. If you know the normal way in which the game is played, and you now find yourself in a position where the advanatage is now enormously in your favor suddenly... theres a good chance you might be doing something you shouldn't be.

The devs were right to fix the exploits, it doesn't make a weaker game it makes a stronger game. If people choose to leave over the actions they themselves took then thats on them.
