I'm guessing that CoH is trying to compensate for your 'widescreen' mode and doing a poor job of it. Like you said, if your in-game resolution matches your desktop resolution, then that should fix it. But, I'm sure someone other than I has a better knowledge of how all that works.
If it makes you feel any better, I too set my in-game resolution to match my desktop resolution (1280x1024), but the game still vertically stretches the screen an inch or two and I've followed all of the instructions I could find on this forum to fix it. At this point, I've just given up and decided to live with it. :/
It's the video driver. Upgrade to the next version.

hi everyone. i just bought CoH through steam and got it installed and running fine except that there are these big black margins cutting off a good portion of the bottom and right sections of the screen, enough that i can't see most of the name entry fields and buttons on the main menu. also my mouse is off by about two inches in game. i found a similar problem in the vista issues sticky that said i should set the desktop resolution to CoH's default of 1024x768 the first time i ran the game, so i reinstalled and tried that which didn't work. i tried running in safe mode and that seems to work better, but i still have around a half inch of black on the bottom of the screen and the same amount is cut off on the top (also the reso is 800x600 which is disgusting looking). through safe mode i tried setting the reso to 1440x900 (my desktop reso) and putting the 3D slider just below it as someone else suggested, but that also failed. my desktop is only a couple of months old and the drivers are all up to date according to their respective websites. also my monitor is widescreen with a nvidia geforce 9500 GS and i'm running vista(sigh), don't know if that has anything to do with it. please help, any ideas would be much appreciated.
edit: i tried to regedit so that 1440x900 would be default for CoH and that didn't fix it. the resolution is changing correctly but the black margins don't go away, they just get larger or smaller.
