Today I notice my computer locked up, I did a virus scan, update spybot, scan disk. Still locks yp

Check the task manager and this process searchprotocolhost.exe keeps growing and growing almost two gigs of memory before my computer freezes.

Anyone hear anything like this?

Yes it is. To get around the problem, I Start / Run and in the box type services.msc and press enter/click OK. Go down to Windows Search and double click on it. Stop the service and then disable it from starting.

More info on your machine would be a plus...... such as Operating system and a Hijackthis log. It sounds like you may have an issue that sprung up sometime back altho I dont remember any real cure being found without disableing it. The downside is that if you use outlook instant search it will cause it to not function. Here is the way to disable it

Go to Start>Run

and type:

services.msc

click ok

find windows search in the list and stop the service. Now right click Windows Search and go to Properties. Now change the startup type in the pull down menu to Disabled.

link to the origial chat thread is here

If you have no need of the indexing service for faster file searches you can disable the whole thing by following this guide ( windows vista only ) here

I think that did it. Thank you

Was that a virus or just Microsoft dropping the ball?

Some Malware are known to mask themselves a searchprotocolhost.exe, but in this case it is a Microsoft issue.
