How can I dress up a poster (image) and add text?

I want to make a poster for my arc. I need to replace one image which is too dark - but mostly I want to make it look like a poster and add text.
I have gimp but zero skills with images other than cut and paste and resize.
Should I add in borders between the pictures?
How do I get cool font to use?
How do I get the letters to stand out on the picture?
Also how do I get the image tag to work on these boards?
