Apex, where is he now? You tell me.

Okay so I was thinking about possibly using Apex from the Blue King City of Heroes comic book run, in a coh fan made comic I am making.

I like the character alot and I think he would make a good team up between him and my guy Sin Stalker, especially since they are both pretty much completely human.

So I was thinking about this and there are so many possibilities for Apex now and I was hoping to get some feedback from you all here in probably one of the most creative areas on the forums.

A couple of my thoughts about where he is now.

Well first off he was pretty much a Martial Arts/ Reflexes scrapper. At the end of the blue king run he has War Witch's sword which is probably my first big question about him.
Do you think he would have started using that sword?

I was thinking:
A. He uses it.
B. He doesnt use it but keeps it on him. Like how Ms. Liberty has that sword but never uses it.
C. He has it but keeps it on the mantle or some other kind of display back at his HQ/apartment.

Any thoughts on this?

My next major question or thought about him is, would his personality have changed alot?
His friends died at the end of that series. Now I know for a time he would be very broody but still today? I think about it and I dont think so. I mean War Witch is there for him to talk to in Croatoa anytime pretty much. He can also go to Pocket D to see an alternate dimensional version of her apparently.

So, do you think Apex would have become gruffer, lighter, stayed the same?

Also, do you think Apex would have eventually found more teamates or gone solo?

My only other thought was one that is very minor but I'll mention it. Even though it doesnt effect the comic really... He was originally a Reflexes scrapper... mainly cuz that was really the only option available at the time. Today do you think he would be a Willpower? I mean his invuln side of that can be explained with his kevlar and whatnot (mentioned at the beginning of issue 3 or 4, cant remember).

Thinking about the willpower vs reflexes thing... i also thought...

If Apex is using War Witch's sword, does that mean he could also be using a shield?

A bunch of things rolling through my head and since this isnt my character... not even really the comics character but CoHs character and its communities character, I was hoping for some intellegent, thoughtout feedback here.

Also if anyone knows of any Fan Fiction done by others with Apex in it, please let me know with some linkage.

Thank you.

-Sin

It's been a while since I read the original comics, but I thought that Apex was keeping the sword to find a successor to War Witch.

As for how he'd be today ... Apex struck me as the kind of guy that would mourn his friends, but he is the type to make new ones. Also, he had his sister to look out for-- have to admit that I was kind of bummed that the budding romance between her and Horus didn't get a resolution.

Sword on mantel piece its a relic eventually to generate a new hero. Solo cause he's a scrapper back before I-3 and before I-3 Tanks were the ultimate king.

As a matter of fact I think I recall Apex got a job at Paragon Pizza J/K

I recently got a weird feeling that the Brawler would have introduced him to Ms. Liberty... Sort of a "Well, your hearts are in the same place after all..." kind of match up.

However, as far as canonical reports, there are just a couple badges that make reference to him. It was as if the Blue King run was showing how a hero could rise to prominence ("Come on, all you heroes! We're taking down Requiem!") and swiftly fall right back into obscurity ("*sigh* Level 15 Scrapper, L-F-T!"). Oddly enough, it was War Witch that came back from that ordeal and made an impact in the gameworld.

Sadly, all that can be said about Apex is supposition and fan fiction. He's a Brawler-trained Scrapper, though, and a man driven by a sensation in his soul to protect the people around him and right the wrongs of the world. Tack onto that the murders of his friends, and you've got the makings for a proper hero. He should thank his lucky stars that fate didn't demand he lose his family, too (plus, Horus and War Witch died "comic book" deaths, so there's a chance they'll be able to come back corporeally; goodness knows, Horus already did once).

You know, I can visualize a piece where Horus' Kheldian meets up with Apex's sister again. For all intents and purposes, though, I'd say that "Horus" died when he discovered his true origins as nothing of the human conscious seemed to remain to him after he regained his Kheldian memories.

The final page of the comic is titled "Some Time Later, Paragon City". That's deliberately vague. It could be ten minutes or ten months. Hernando is nostalgic but looking to the future. The scabbard is attached to his back and he's replacing the sword into it.

There's no reason to carry it around like that if he has no intention of using it. It's no coincidence that, aside from being out of the way for punching people, the sword is positioned where it would be hung according to the weapon-drawing animations used in City of Heroes.

I remember back in the day that one of the rationales for the shout of "Level fifteen scrapper..." (ignoring the obvious fan service) was that he had re-rolled into broadsword. *heh* A level fifteen would never have taken on most of the enemies that Apex fought during the run of the comic.

If I was to judge by the scene, his mourning is finished and he's stepping out into the city once again to take up the mantle of hero.

As to his personality, I think Apex would be pretty much the same as ever. A little sadder and wiser, but not fundamentally altered. If having his roommate burn down a warehouse full of people and kill many of them didn't affect him, I don't see him being eternally damaged by her death.

He's gregarious by nature, so I'd see him joining a group or at least joining up with some more or less permanent partners again.

Hm, all very good points and brought to mind a few other questions I'd like to share and see what you all think of them aswell.

He does have the sword at the end but the sword is a blunt iron sword. Not very strong (unless its been fixed since him getting it from war witch).
Also that with the words War Witch told him... perhaps he is carrying that around in hopes of finding the "next" one.
That seems like it may be a good quest for him to be on since then.

The next thing is that the end of the Top Cow run. Positron is trying to make War Witch solid again. What if the person bringing Positron the things he needs to do that is Apex?
What if Apex's next quest (besides finding the next guardian or whatever) is his personal quest to bring back War Witch... and possibly even see what he can do about Horus?

There's nothing to be done about Horus, IMO. Horus was an illusion. A psychotic break. Unlike the Kheldian meldings we have in-game, Horus was dead from the get-go, or he died within seconds of the melding.

His last words to Hernando are telling on two counts: "You, too, we will call upon. Until then, I am Horus no more. I go to wake the Kheldians." One, "Horus" is gone. Two, Sunstorm or another representative of the Kheldians may eventually find a reason to involve Apex with some aspect of their story.

If we assume that Blue King and Top Cow represent the same continuity, then I'd say that Apex hearing about Positron's attempt to reincorporate War Witch and bringing him the sword is perfectly consistent.

On the other hand, if he says "Until then, I am Horus no more" then the possibility exists that he will be Horus again when he calls upon Apex again....

Perhaps. When he says "we will call upon you too" he is referring to the Kheldians as a group. He says "too" because he told War Witch a couple of panels prior that she should rebuild her coven because the time was coming when the Kheldians would need to ally with the witches and, more generally, the supers. "Refound your coven, witch. Choose a NEW warrior to take your place. The time is coming when my kind must call on your kind."

The alien nature of the Kheldian is emphasized by the fact that it the final scenes it doesn't refer to either War Witch or Apex by name. It also refers to its fellows as "some are sleeping, as I did in Horus". The Kheldian sees Horus as a vessel, nothing more. It does not see Horus as part of itself the way that a Kheldian melded with a living human might.

The way I see things, it might well be some other Kheldian that would "call on" Apex. If his "friend" was the one to make the call, it might acknowledge Apex's fond memories of "Horus" but I don't see it wanting to BE Horus.

Of course, you could always pull the Trill gambit and have Apex discover that his friend "Horus" is now melded to a very comely 18-year-old girl who thinks that Apex is a bit of a hottie. I may have just given away a really good idea for mission architect story arc. *heh*

Heh. Good one, Slick.

I have to admit that I was toying with the idea of a story wherein the Kheldian Formerly Known as Horus showed up wanting to get to know Apex's sister again ... but was a female this time ...

God I wish.... That would be simply astounding. But my Main and my Peacebringer are married. I think I need to elucidate on their relationship more in Grey's Army...

But the changes that Kheldians visit upon their hosts aren't entirely cataloged. For instance, Charlene's Kheldian (Sol'Ra T'Cha; very loosely translated as "Star Scatter") made her younger. It was an unintended result, one that has had some recent consequences. Consequences I haven't fully explored yet.

However, for Randall, it's more of a problem that he's not entirely certain who he's talking to anymore. He's certain the one that cooks is still his wife (so he tries to talk to her as much as he can at these moments, while also sneaking in quick snacks). The rest of the time, though, it could be Sol'Ra, it could be Charlene, he could even be talking to a whole freaking Kheldian network for all he knows. It makes discussing politics, their futures (especially since they don't know if her newly acquired youth is permanent) and even normal day-to-day nick-nacks like television shows or their "heroic pursuits" difficult to interpret, because Charlene's constantly shifting between talking about the immediate future or even the present and talking about eons of change (sometimes in the same sentence).

Writing Zeke and his Reformed Nictus' back-and-forth comes easier to me for some reason. It's like they're discussing ideology without disagreeing or agreeing. But having two characters discussing mundanities and throwing in the difficulty of a third party inside the mind of one... Despite being uncomfortably close to writing a schizophrenic conversation, it just seems so... Inconsequential in the end...

Oh dear... it seems we may have hijacked this thread

Hm, yeah. I see now that Apex has a long storyline a head of him. From his hand in helping to reform the coven... to a possible personal quest to help in anyway to bring War Witch back... to his eventual calling by the Kheldians for some reason... he has a long way to go.

I may, instead of doing a teamup with Sin and Apex, go with an actual Apex fan fic comic.

Not sure if I can handle doing two comic series at the same time although it may be cool to try.

Thank you all for your input. Its been most insightful.

If anyone else has anything to add, please do!

Ps. I want back details! Such as scabbards/shealths, weapons, quiver, etc.!!!!
