A scream rang out through the cool night air as she tumbled to the ground, struggling madly against her attacker. His friend, already pinning her arms behind her, clapped his other hand over her mouth. Eyes wide, she stared into the face of the massive man in front of her, silently begging, please, please dont do this to me, please leave me alone and go, but she knew there would be no hope, no help.
A chuckle sounded behind her as the man in front of her leered at her, practically drooling, as he began to unbuckle his belt, as he began to move closer to her, closer
NOOOOOOOOOOO! she screamed, sitting bolt upright in bed. Panting in terror, she clutched the sheets to her chest in a futile effort to protect herself from her nightmare. She reached one shaking hand over and hit the snooze button on her blaring alarm clock, stopping its noise.
She settled her glasses onto her face and sighed. Nightmares again. Eventually, they told her, the nightmares would stop, she would be able to sleep normally again. Of course, for that to happen, she would have to stop reading before bed
With this thought still in her mind, she glanced over at the clock, then shrieked again, this time in annoyance instead of fear. Im LATE! she cried, throwing off the blankets and jumping out of bed.
She mumbled to herself as she rooted through her disorganized bedroom for clothes, finally settling on a clean pair of khakis and a shapeless green sweater she found between a stack of books and the wall. Heading into the bathroom, she brushed her teeth and eyed her frizzy brown hair critically, then grabbed her hairbrush from on top of another book and threw it back in a ponytail.
Feed the dog, she muttered, moving towards the kitchen of her tiny apartment, feed the cat, feed the fish, feed me Distracted, she stuffed a granola bar into her mouth as she poured out her respective pets food. Now you be good today, she admonished them. No peeing on the carpet, Sadie. Jazzy, be nice to Sadie-no clawing the couc hagain either! And Fizz you just do what you do, okay? The animals steadfastly ignored her as they ate, and she sighed again and grabbed her keys.
Ill see you after work. Remember, be good! No chewing on my books! I love you, goodbye!
Bolting out the door and remembering to lock it behind her for once, she ran down the stairs, then ran back upstairs, unlocked the door, grabbed her purse, yelled Bye! again and ran back down to the street.
Of course, then she had to go back up and lock the door again.
Back down on the sidewalk for the third time, she pulled her mp3 player out of her purse and plugged it into her ears as she walked briskly down the street towards Paragon University. The opening strains of November Rain filed her head, and she changed songs in disgust. Its not November, its only February sure feels like November though she muttered to herself.
Ten minutes later, she ran up the steps and into the building, stuffing her mp3 player back into her purse just in time to be confronted by one of the Professors.
Late again, Jodie? the man smiled as he stepped aside, waiting for her to pass.
Sorry, sir, no time to talk! Those books wont shelve themselves, you know!
Jodie headed into the library and swerved into the head librarians office, dropping off her purse and coat and punching in. Fortunately, her boss was out of town. She pulled her nametag from her purse and pinned it onto her sweater.
Jodie Wilkins, Assistant Librarian, she read off it, as she did every day. Taking a deep breath, she pasted a smile on her face, grabbed a cart, and headed out to work.
City of Heroes taught me that when the world is burning, you don't just stand by and watch, you grab a fire extinguisher and do whatever you can to stop it-even if it's not much at all. Sign the petition to keep City of Heroes alive HERE.
