Side by side comparison of your pencils with my inks...

I did use the thick outside, thin outside method, but mostly thick on the left. I also varied my thin lines as much as possible on the inside, so that the weight would add depth. The deep blacks I didn't want to fill in since I was afraid it might look too splotchy and take away from the face, which to me is the main expression.

I also used several layers of white to crisp up my straight edges and add highlights. Finally I used a custom made brush (by me) to do the hair... by the way this was inked digitally in about 40 minutes. It was actually a lot of fun to do, I don't usually go this slow, so I learned some things doing it. Slow is the way....

If you want a HUGE version, let me know where to email it. this is only 1/3 of the actual size I think. Anyway I hope this helps. You can achieve the same thing with pens and brushes, and white out, which is the traditional method...

I use Adobe Illustrator, like Brian Denhem who's inked Iron Man... and according to him more industry people are inking this way. I can't say enough of the ease of it, since ALL the lines are adjustable, i.e. less mistakes, and ALL of them fixable in seconds.

Anyway hope you like it.

WoW! i can see a deffinite change to the way I inked that picture.
I hadnt even thought of the white lines. that looks much more expressive. Id love to see the full size of it, my email is public on my deviant art page which is in my sig. wow. I had heard adobe illustrator was good for the job but ive never had it so i figured id try the traditional aprouch, but i color digitally so why the hell not try inking digitally. illustrator sounds like a very worthwile investment. thank you so much for all your help lady j. I look forward to seeing the full sized image.

Make sure when you use the Illustrator Brush tool to double click the tool itself in the tool tray, so that a box pops up, UNCHECK the "keep selection" box. This will allow you to draw "naturally", other wise every line you set down gets changed by the next one because the computer thinks you "want" to redraw it.

There are tons of free brushes online, I use Calligraphy brushes for inking, but then my tablet is an Intuos 3 and can pick up on pen pressure. You won't have that ability with a 512 pressure sensitive Wacom, like their graphire series. Just so you know.

I believe you can get an older version of Illustrator and have the same abilities, which might only cost you a couple of hundred rather than $699 for the current version.

I will email you the HUGE version now.

Here' is the actual size head.
