Question about comic books

Okay so I really need to know, what is the font size for the average comic? Is it about font size 7? 8? 9? bigger?

I am trying to figure this out and could really use help. Please only answer if you know for sure the font size. I assume font sizes vary so if there are multiple choices, can you provide some comic series as examples?

Thank you!

It really depends. The print size of a comic book differs greatly from the design size. Most traditional (american) comic pages start out 11x17 and are shrunk by about 60 % (depends on whether they have a border or bleed to the page).

If you're making a comic, make sure that you choose a font that is easy to read - sans serif, in any case because serif fonts become difficult at even medium sizes.

Also, per each word balloon or exposition block, the font size can change depending on how much you need to cram into it.

Don't start with the same-size page as a real comic book, definitely start larger and shrink down. Almost all art looks better printed smaller than it's designed. Web comics, not so much.

Right, I understand all that. I am using a Big Kev font and have been using a size of 8. I am doing issue 4 of my comic, available to read at www.justiceknights.net and I have a few pages where there is alot of talking. I am having trouble keeping it from overtaking the art/screen shots and I am trying out a font size of 7. I know thats not at all bad for reading on a computer as you can zoom in but if I ever print any of these out, I am curious if it would be readable.

I posted this in another section of the forums and someone said they measured there current comics (ones that are just being released) and they said it looks like it is around 7 to 8.

I was wondering if anyone else thinks its about that size or bigger or smaller and if a font size of 7 would be too small when printed out?

Thank you very much for the reply.

Seven is pretty small, printed. Though, again, if it's in a font that's clear and doesn't lose anything by being broken up (too thin) or crunched together (too fat) it's still readable by most people.

Yeah, I am looking at the old coh comics and the blue king ones and other random comics, I dont see how they fit most of that stuff as a font 8...

Well, you can always try a different tactic, since you've got your comic online. I don't know how you personally start creating, whether you start on a tablet or a piece of paper and scan?

If you're scanning paper and going from there, don't put the word balloons and words on until *after* it's been shrunk. Do a test or two with just the lines, to see if you need more room and can move things around digitally rather than by hand.

If you're doing it all on a tablet, again I'm not sure what size you're working with to start, but putting the words on *after* any resizing would probably work well if you're concerned. Give it a try anyway, to see the difference between lettering the full-sized image, and lettering the small sized one.

If you go to my website www.justiceknights.net youll see what it is.
I am using coh screen shots, no tablet, no drawer, as I dont know any artists who wish to collaberate and I use Planetwides' Comic Book Creator. Back from that coh comic contest.

I have tried about both font 7 and 8 for the font Big Kev and both seem fine on the computer. Its printing out I am unsure about so I was hoping if there was an average of like... 6 to 8 or 7 to 9 or something that most comic font ends up being in the end, not before shrunk.

Print out pages with just text, using the alphabet or a sample text including all letters (the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog) and next to it the font size. Print a block of text from 24 or 28 point all the way down to 5 or 6, to get a good idea of what you'll be seeing. Also remember that not all text has to be black on white.
