Graver And Starchasm two of our local City of Heroes art forum artists both live in New Orleans and while im fairly certain they have evacuated in light of Hurricane Gustavs visit it might be nice just to put them in your prayers or thoughts just to be on the safe side .

Thanks for the heads up, Strawberry. My wife and I were part of the Katrina scene from New Orleans about 3 years ago...I lived there for 18 years prior to Katrina and still have lots of friends there. Most of them were accounted for and safe as of this afternoon.

Wanna be heros, folks? Check with your local Red Cross about volunteering when this mess is over with.

Thanks Scarfy, was just thinking about them when I woke up this morning, and was going to put up a similar thread.

/e fingers crossed, deities prayed to, and Force abused to make sure they're okay.

As a devoted New Orleanian, I wanna say thanks for the thoughts. Luckily it doesn't seem to be another Katrina for us. Some of the good vibes need to be sent to Laforche and Houma and other coastal regions though. They're getting the teeth of the surge apparently.

First Katrina, now Gustav. How many hurricanes before they just decide to abandon New Orleans, build some new-new orleans somewhere less hurricane prone, and save the remaining human population?

So in the nearly 300 years since the city was built, after two hurricanes we should just abandon it? If you knew anything you'd realize there were more than just these two latest ones (ever heard of Betsy or Camille?) and we still survived and moved on. And where should we build New-New Orleans? Idaho? Yeah the Creole culture is thriving out that way. A city whose culture and history are founded on a coastal, fishing and shipping industry is going to face storms just like the East Coast does. We have the particular problem of being below sea level which has special problems that need to be addressed in a more timely fashion than the Army Corps of Engineers and its endless red tape are currently working. If we can put robots on Mars... we can install proper protection for a coastal city that has a singular style and beauty in the whole country. And no I'm not talking about the drunk college kids on Bourbon Street. If you've really been to NOLA you know the city is so much more than Mardi Gras. It's art and music and European architecture and the best food ANYWHERE and street car bells and riverboat calliopes and celebrating EVERYTHING and sitting on your stoop to gab with your neighbors. And you might say we could do that anywhere but it didn't happen anywhere. It happened right there. Where at least 6 generations of my family have lived, died and are buried. So no thanks. We'll rebuild not relocate.

Umm, because its their home?

The levees that were built to stop flooding on the Mississippi has led to the coastal marshlands to die off. The marshlands help impede the storm surge from hurricanes, thereby reducing the flooding of the city. In contrast, if the levees weren't there, the Mississippi could/would flood the city as well. If the government can get its head out of its collective arses, they could come up with an intelligent solution to both problems. You will never stop flooding in New Orleans, but you can reduce it significantly. Putting up taller walls will only lead to greater disasters.

Man, I gotta stop watching Nova. My head hurts.

Yeah, I've been thinking about all my friends and relatives in the New Orleans/Texas coast regions.

And as I recently went to New Orleans and seeing the rebuilding still left to do, I'm hoping NOLA will weather this storm well. I'd like to return to take more pictures (some of which can be found in my dA account).

honestly, I'm just thankful it's not hitting Houston hard...our evac plan sucks.

From the reports it appears the storm smacked the LA coast west of New Orleans... plus the storm surge was nowhere near as bad as Katrina.

As for relocating the Big Easy... no way. Too much history and culture.

Update from Starchasm via her DA journal

<<<<""Just an update to let you guys know that Graver and I evacuated to Little Rock on Saturday. We're still here waiting to hear when they're going to start letting normal people back into the city.

I've heard reports of people making it past the checkpoints, but I really don't want to chance driving 7 1/2 hours with 2 dogs and a cat only to get turned away 10 miles from the apartment.

Graver is still working away up here with what limited supplies he brought (workaholic ;P ). A LOT of Little Rock is without power now, though. We still have power, but the chimney just started leaking. Nuts.

Aaaaand on top of it all, Ozzy has gotten explosive diarreah. Woo.

Also, driving with a torn meniscus, even when you are splitting driving duties, SUCKS. And my surgical consult has been pushed back at least a week now (it was supposed to be tomorrow).

Watch this space! I'll update as soon as I find out if our NOLA apartment has power, or if it's even still there.">>>>>>>>

Oh, I didn't realize that Starchasm and Graver lived together, I noticed that Starchasm was in close contact with Graver but I never knew it was that close :3.

I hope, everyone that was in the path of gustav is safe, and haven't lost more than they can bear.

I just got a note from Star saying they were going to try and go home tomorrow (Sept 4). My commission is in a plastic bag in a closet, so we're both hoping it's safe and dry.

Glad to know Star and Graver are safe, one of my friends and SG mates was caught in Baton Rouge, which got the eyewall of the storm. She's safe, but man, the stories she told were insane.

As to the persons/person stating "just move New Orleans"... Um... New Orleans is in the same situation as Holland, they're both below sea levels. Moving a city or country is just silly. New Orleans has dealt and will deal with storms and being situated below sea level as it always has. If the Dutch can engineer levies to hold back the North Sea for as long as it has, then so can New Orleans.
