One more done, and with the recording volume set to about 30% of maximum, in Windows. Its still too loud, but I think its better than before.

Next time, I'll try 20% or thereabouts.

Hmmm, you might try 2% to make sure it's really making a difference. Then you'll know for sure it's making a difference.
