If your using Photoshop there are a couple of ways you can take a character out. You can use the Magic wand tool to and then cut it out or by going to filter then extract and highlight all around the area then fill it in. that will remove everything but the highlights stuff. there are a couple of other ways but i don't remember them atm

Careful, Photoshop noodling can become an addiction. 
For the specific desire to remove a character from an image, I generally use the Extract function under the Filter menu. It can be tedious for some things, but it's generally quicker than most other techniques.
Of course, remember to copy your image first, in case you mess up. "Undo" is my all-time favorite button, but sometimes it's better to be working with a copy rather than the original, even if it just a screenshot.
